Gustafson Black was a senior officer in the Federated Suns Navy during the Thirty-first century.[1]
History[edit]
Gustafson Black was the chair of the courtmartial that sentenced Vice Admiral Walker Clay to death by firing squad on 14 April 3079, following Clay's actions as Commanding Officer of the Fox-class FSS Indomitable while serving as part of the Coalition Naval Task Force designated Task Force EARTHBOUND.[1]
The Indomitable and a sister ship, the FSS Admiral Michael Saille, were the Federated Suns' contribution to Task Force EARTHBOUND, and were assigned as part of the missil defence grid. Clay disobeyed orders and moved the Indomitable out of position to attack the WoBS Beneficence, the Avalon-class cruiser which had formerly been the FCS Melissa Davion before being captured and suborned by the Word of Blake. Clay also ordered Rear Admiral Marcelle of the Admiral Michael Saille to attack the Beneficence, and Clay's first officer was shot and killed while attempting to relieve Clay of command in accordance with the Federated Suns' Military Code of Conduct.[1]
As a result of Clay's actions, the Indomitable was destroyed along with nearly nine-tenths of her crew, and the Admiral Michael Saille was critically damaged and Rear Admiral Marcelle was killed. The gap created in the defence grid allowed the Word of Blake to hit the Clan Diamond Shark Potemkin-class carrier DCS Red Tide with multiple nuclear missiles, resulting in her destruction as well. After declaring the verdict of the courtmartial on 14 April 3079 - said execution to be conducted the following morning - Gustafson told Clay that he should have had the decency to die with his ship.[1]
