Description
The Ajax Assault Tank is an Omni-capable combat vehicle that is the follow-up to GM's Challenger X MBT. The Ajax follows on the heels of the successful Manteuffel OmniVehicle. The Ajax is slow, only capable of attaining speeds up to 54 km/h. Since speed is not its defense, the designers gave the Ajax nineteen tons of armor. The room for all of this armor comes from the XL Engine the Ajax uses for power.[1]
Armament
The primary configuration of the Ajax carries an Ultra Autocannon/10 and a Gauss Rifle. Both weapons carry sufficient ammunition for most engagements. For backup, the Ajax mounts a pair of Medium Pulse Lasers and a Streak SRM-4. All the weapons are mounted in a turret, allowing the crew of the Ajax to bring them all to bear on any target within range, regardless of where it is in relation to the tank's facing. A C3 Slave Unit allows the Assault Tank to tie into a C3 network, making it weapons fire all the more accurate.[1]
Alternate Configurations
- Alt. Config. A - This very popular configuration carries three Rotary Autocannon/5s, along with nine tons of ammunition. A Guardian ECM Suite provides protection against enemy electronics. An ER Small Laser is mounted in the turret along with the autocannons, though it is rarely of much use. As with the primary configuration, the Ajax A carries a C3 Slave. BV (1.0) = 1,409 (C3: 265)[2]
- Alt. Config. B - The third configuration makes the Ajax into a support units with the inclusion of three LRM-15s that are slaved to an Artemis IV Fire Control System and a PPC. Six tons of ammunition rarely leave the missile launchers out of supply. A C3 Computer makes this an effective command vehicle, allowing the Ajax B to coordinate the fire of a lance or company. BV (1.0) 1,081 (C3: 233)[2]
- Sealed configuration - This configuration is intended to support amphibious assaults. As such it uses Environmental Sealing to create a watertight tank. An SRT-6 with 30 salvos provides defense against submarine threats, while an MML-9 with 2 tons of ammo, ER Large Laser and two Medium Pulse Lasers provide firepower against other threats. The Guardian ECM Suite and C3 Slave from other versions is also in place. The vehicle is also equipped with an CASE system in case of an ammo explosion. BV (2.0) = 1,551[3]
