Cygnus
System Information
X:Y Coordinates-7.08:-500.14[e]

The Cygnus system was home to at least one habitable world and as at 3145 was located in the Fronc Reaches.[1][2]

System Description

The Cygnus system is located near the Fronc and Spencer systems.[1][2]

System History

The Cygnus system was colonised in 3057[3] but didn't begin to appear on maps until later, when the system was considered significant enough to merit its location being recorded.

Planetary History

Cygnus was one of the worlds settled within the New Colony Region as a result of the Treaty of Taurus, with the first colonists arriving in 3057. The colonists discovered that a local lifeform, the Cygnus Caribou, was already present in abundance, traveling in large herds across the tundra regions of the world. The colonists interbred the native caribou with their own domesticated cattle, and the resulting hybrid offspring were better suited to the temperate lowland plains found in the southern hemisphere of the world. The distinctive flavor of meat taken from both the domesticated caribou and the wild animals became a prized foodstuff for gourmet cooks. It was later discovered that the normally harmless caribou could become rather more dangerous during the periods marked by the local phenomenon known as "the demon wind" - a confluence of certain weather patterns and the blooming season of the tundra witch, a northern flower. The hallucinogenic pollen of the tundra witch travels for kilometers under these conditions, and the effects of the pollen can cause the caribou herds to stampede.[3]

When the New Colony Region declared itself independent in 3066 Cygnus joined the newly-formed Fronc Reaches. As with the populations of the other Fronc Reaches worlds, the inhabitants of Cygnus were hopeful that trade agreements with other states such as the Marian Hegemony, Outworlds Alliance and Taurian Concordat would lead to prosperity; in the case of Cygnus, the major export was expected to be gemstones from the opal mines found on the planet.[27]

In September 3083 eighty-three people were killed on Cygnus by Deputy Marshal Lon Donner of the Colonial Marshals. Donner executed three locals who had been found guilty of murdering a family of refugees from the Capellan Confederation only to find himself confronted with a rioting mob as a result. Donner fired into the mob to clear a route to his 'Mech and then used his 'Mech's weapons to disperse the riot; as a result, eighty-three people died. While a review judged that Donner had acted without malice, Force Commander Dirk McEvans removed Donner from active duty, chastised him and reassigned Donner to teaching duty at the Marshalry Academy.[28]
