History[edit]

Star League Era[edit]

Following the coup launched by Stefan Amaris and the decision by General Aleksandr Kerensky to oppose Amaris' usurpation of the Terran Hegemony the Texas-class battleship SLS Mountbatten (often misspelled as Mountbatton; see Notes below) was soon involved in the fighting against forces loyal to Amaris and the Rim Worlds Republic. Having pulled out of the campaign resulting from the Periphery Uprising Kerensky launched a campaign to conquer the Rim Worlds Republic, and by 2767 the SLDF was in urgent need of naval dry docks capable of supporting and repairing the ships within the SLDF black water navy. As a result in early 2768 the Mountbatten led a flotilla to capture the shipyards in the Star's End system. Despite the lack of a Republican naval force in the system and the defenders being caught unaware, the fight for the shipyards was very challenging for the SLDF forces; a number of facilities within the shipyards were destroyed, either sabotaged by the Republicans or, in the case of helium storage facility, through a crippled SLDF aerospace fighter crashing. The battle lasted for fourteen hours before the CAG of the Mountbatten's fighter forces, Stephen McKenna, reported that the complex was finally secure.[1]

The Mountbatten was one of the Star League Defense Force naval WarShips that survived the Hegemony Campaign to liberate Terra from the forces of Stefan Amaris and subsequently followed General Aleksandr Kerensky on the Exodus. The Mountbatten was eventually commanded by Stephen McKenna, the SLDF officer who would become the founder of Clan Snow Raven.[2]

Clan Era[edit]

As of 3061 the Mountbatten had been subsumed into the Snow Raven touman and was serving as the CSR Mountbatten, one of five WarShips that made up the Storm Crow Naval Pursuit Star and one of the few Clan WarShips to have retained her SLDF name.[2] The Mountbatten continued to serve in the Storm Crow Naval Pursuit Star throughout the 3060s alongside the Cameron-class battlecruiser CSR Kerensky's Hope, the Sovetskii Soyuz-class heavy cruiser CSR Storm Crow, the Conqueror-class carrier CSR Ark Royal and the Carrack-class transport CSR Nestling.[3]

The Jihad[edit]

The Storm Crow Naval Pursuit Star was responsible for the scourging of Galedon V, in which every major city on the planet was bombarded from orbit by Snow Raven WarShips a week after the population was given notice to flee;[4] this massively destructive act was retaliation for the perceived involvement of the Draconis Combine in the destruction of the Swift Wing Naval Assault Star at Ramora on the 5th of January 3069,[5] although later investigation subsequently placed the blame for the action on the hands of terrorists backed by the Word of Blake.[6][7]

Mountbatten was one of three vessels that took fleeing civilians from Galedon as isorla only to subsequently discover that the civilians had brought the Curse of Galedon with them - an Age of War bioweapon later identified as XCON-73 that had been unleashed accidentally during an earlier conflict on the planet. Not only were the civilians infected, but XCON-73 was also being carried through the ventilation systems on all three ships. The three infected ships - the Mountbatten, Nestling and Storm Crow - were declared as targets of a Trial of Annihilation by Star Admiral Troy McKenna, the senior officer amongst the uninfected vessels. The Nesting immediately vented her holds into space, killing all the civilians aboard, but McKenna's forces pressed the attack; the Captains of all three infected ships fought back, but McKenna's forces prevailed, disabling or destroying all three ships.[4]

Notes[edit]

  • The name of this WarShip is spelled differently in different canonical sources. While Wars of Reaving, Historical: Liberation of Terra Volume 1 and Jihad: Final Reckoning spell it as Mountbatten, Field Manual: Warden Clans and Field Manual: Updates spell it as Mountbatton. Since the former name is a notable nonfictional noble house in the real world while the latter spelling only ever seems to appear as a misspelling of that noble houses's name, it is assumed that Mountbatten is the ship's correct name.
