The Space Gamer, Space Gamer/Fantasy Gamer beginning in 1985, was a gaming magazine focusing on science fiction and fantasy products. It ran sporadically for fifteen years, with six publishers producing a total of 96 issues.

Only BattleTech-related material is listed here.

Issue 75 (July/August 1985)

Battledroids by Aaron Allston.

FLE-15 Flea Type Light BattleMech. A 15-ton version with a medium laser, two small lasers, and two machine guns. Four variants (A–D) are described. A miniature from Ral Partha, catalog #20-805, is noted.

Infotech on BattleTech by Scott Tanner.

An overview of BattleTech and related systems CityTech, AeroTech, and MechWarrior.

On the House: Popular House Rules for BattleTech by Stephen Fuelleman.

House rules covering movement, combat and construction.

Issue 79 (August/September 1987)

Technical Data Readout: CST-3S Cestus Type Heavy BattleMech by Dale Kemper. Art by John Bridges.

An ancient long-range fire support design by Technicron Manufacturing, only 5% remain in operation. Similar to a Rifleman with the movement profile of a Panther, the arms paired an AC/2 with a medium laser, with an LRM-5 in each side torso. A variant sacrifices the jump jets, some armor, and extra heat sinks to mount larger missile racks. The jump jets were not included in the stats, producing a 'Mech two tons underweight, two tons overweight with the jump jets included.
  • This is not the canon Cestus BattleMech, but rather statistics intended for the Cestus figure produced by Ral Partha Enterprises, commonly called the Battledroid Cestus. The article was reprinted in Challenge issue 44, April/May 1990.

Issue 80 (October/November 1987)

Scanner.

A regular feature containing coming releases, announcements, etc. for various companies.

Optional Smoke Rules For Battletech by Robert Isenberg.

Issue 83 (October/November 1988)

Scanner

FASA's upcoming release schedule includes Shrapnel, Warrior: Riposte, PlasTech, The Kell Hounds, The Periphery.

New Inborn Abilities for MechWarrior by Barry Osser.

  • MechWarrior character options, both positive and negative.

Issue 85 (January/February 1989)

ARTICLE: The Mechwarrior Aliens by Barry Osser. This two-page article features three new races for MechWarrior, the Gecko, the Vegan and the Briata. Reaction to the introduction of nonhumans into the BattleTech Universe was often critical.
