The officer commanding XXXVI Corps immediately before the Periphery Uprising was Major General Rebecca Rhodes, an officer whose career began in the 159th BattleMech Division; known for her calm and serene attitude, Rhodes had been promoted up through the ranks to command XXXVI Corps and was deeply respected by the personnel under her command. XXXVI Corps had already been a formation known for stalwart professionalism, but Rhodes' leadership further reinforced the attitude and performance of her troops, who respected the decisions she made and who often referred to her with considerable affection as "our fair lady Becca". The Twenty-first remained the problem children of the Corps despite Rhodes' best efforts, however; in 2764 she was working closely with the Twenty-first's commanding officer, Major General Reinhardt Estevez, in an effort to remove the malcontents from the division and to drive up the performance of the Division, but was meeting with ingrained resistance from a command that felt slighted to have not been converted into a mechanized division, despite General Rhodes arranging for more advanced equipment to them to try and bring them more into line with the rest of XXXVI Corps.

The operational region occupied by XXXVI Corps was increasingly plagued with cross-border raids as the Draconis Combine and Lyran Commonwealth became increasingly antagonistic towards each other, and XXXVI Corps had been struggling to deal with these raids. The Corps as a whole wasn't structured to deal with fast, hit-and-run attacks, and attempts to use the more mobile independent regiments within the Corps had led to problems, in no small part because attempting to defeat the raiders was akin to trying to swat flies with a hammer. Rhodes changed tactics in or around 2764, passing responsibility for acting as first responders onto various sub-units drawn from the Eightieth and Ninety-ninth Mechanized Infantry Divisions and the Fifty-ninth Jump Infantry Division, a strategy that had both reduced complaints from the population of the Combine and reduced civilian casualties but which was likely to become increasingly unworkable as time went on because none of the Divisions were structured to support extensive long-term independent operations at regiment or brigade level.

Unit Description[edit]

XXXVI Corps (or the Thirty-Sixth Corps) was one of the seventy-two Corps that made up the Star League Defense Force. Prior to the collapse of the Star League XXXVI Corps was a large corps consisting of 9 divisions and 1 independent regiment.[1]

History[edit]

In 2764 XXXVI Corps was part of the 16th Army assigned to District 3 of the Draconis Combine Military Region.[1] XXXVI Corps benefited from including some of the most devoted and talented divisions to be found within the SLDF, with only one lackluster unit - the Twenty-first Infantry Division - detracting from the otherwise high standard of ability and dedication found within the Corps. XXXVI Corps had a quieter posting than one of its sister corps within the Sixteenth Army, XI Corps, but still spent a considerable amount of time dealing with the trouble spots that flared up within the Corps' assigned region. One of the more significant problems faced by the Corps was a simply lack of transport assets, making it difficult to keep up with the sudden outbreaks of violence.[2]

Rhodes changed tactics in or around 2764, passing responsibility for acting as first responders onto various sub-units drawn from the Eightieth and Ninety-ninth Mechanized Infantry Divisions and the Fifty-ninth Jump Infantry Division, a strategy that had both reduced complaints from the population of the Combine and reduced civilian casualties but which was likely to become increasingly unworkable as time went on because none of the Divisions were structured to support extensive long-term independent operations at regiment or brigade level.[2]

When the simmering violence and rebellion building in the Periphery erupted with the New Vandenberg Uprising and subsequent Periphery-wide uprising in 2765 XXXVI Corps was deployed into the Periphery Military Region along with the rest of the Sixteenth Army.[1]

XXXVI Corps took heavy casualties during the Periphery Uprising losing four divisions outright, while the Thorin Division was so heavily damaged that it had to be disbanded, leaving XXXVI Corps without a BattleMech division. The Periphery also claimed the only independent regiment in XXXVI Corps, the 40th Dragoon Regiment. The Hegemony Campaign was no kinder; all three remaining mechanized infantry divisions were lost, leaving the 59th Jump Infantry Division as the sole surviving unit of XXXVI Corps.[1]

The 59th chose to follow General Aleksandr Kerensky on the Exodus in 2784.[1]
