Description

The OstWar was Ostmann Industries first attempt at creating a BattleMech, the Ostwar was first designed in 2470, but only entered production in 2500. Due to their late entry into the BattleMech construction industry, Ostmann was technologically behind the times. The OstWar when it was first produced only had primitive technologies, while more recent designs were more advanced and utilized weight saving equipment. The Star League Defense Force decided to pass on purchasing the 'Mech, leaving Ostmann to attempt to sell its design elsewhere. Fortunately, other nation states, such as the Capellan Confederation and the Free Worlds League, were more than happy to buy 'Mechs from the Terra-based firm. Through these actions, Ostmann was able to get the funding needed to build more advanced BattleMech designs, such its successful Ostroc and Ostsol. To save on costs, many of these later designs shared similar parts and allowed for parts from the more primitive OstWar to be utilized as spares.

This became the true life saver for Ostmann's later designs after the destruction of the Ostmann plant on Terra. The OstWar design became extinct in the early Succession Wars, but its parts still appeared from time to time on its later successors.

During the Jihad, the Principality of Regulus becoming independent of the fragmenting Free Worlds League, and began to push it's local producers for more 'Mech designs. SelaSys Incorporated's main production lines were at full capacity. However, they also owned an industrial 'Mech factory, Harmony MetalWorks on Harmony. SelaSys recently acquired the primitive OstWar design, and decided to put it back into production since it technology/equipment was not too far removed from the Industrial 'Mechs it's plant was producing. By 3075, it was in full production of the OstWar, looking to update it with modern technologies. However, at this time it would need to construct a new production line to be able produce a modern version of the 'Mech.

Armaments and capacities

The OstWar is armed with a twenty-tube Doombud Long Range Missile launcher for its long range attacks. In close range, the 'Mech is armed with two four-tubed Shannon SH-40 Short-Range Missile launchers in each of it's arms. It also has two Martel Medium Lasers mounted on the left torso. The 'Mech carries three tons of ammunition for the LRM rack, while carrying two tons of SRM ammunition in its left arm.

The OstWar has a host of primitive and heavier technologies throughout its design. It has 17.5 tons of Primitive Standard armor protecting its chassis. It features a primitive cockpit as well.

Most noted feature its primitive eleven ton Hermes Fusion Engine. Which allows the 'Mech move only up to 54 kilometers per hour.

Variants

  • OWR-3M Ostwar - This is Harmony MetalWorks' proposed variant if is able to open new assembly line for it. The re-design includes removing all primitive equipment for standard technology or better. The chassis would be protected by eleven tons of light ferro-fibrous armor and CASE mounted in both side torsos. In addition the 'Mech is equipped with a Guardian ECM Suite in its center torso. It has a standard Hermes 335 Fusion engine, which increase its top speed by 10 kph. The SRM-4 launchers are exchanged for Streaks and given one ton of ammo. The Streak ammunition is moved to the left torso which is shared with Extended Range Medium Lasers which have replaced standards. The LRM-20 launcher is enhanced with Artemis IV FCS and ammunition is situated in the right torso. BV (2.0) = 1,557. Cost 6,758,676 C-bills.
