5th Alliance Guard RCT
The Fighting Fifth
Parent Formation Federated Commonwealth Corps/Alliance Guards
Formed 3045

Initially serving in the Draconis March, the 10th FedCom Corp, and later the 5th Alliance Guard would serve first as a reserve and garrison unit and later as a raiding unit against first the enemies of the Federated Commonwealth and later the Lyran Alliance. The 5th Alliance Guard due to its activities is almost always slightly understrength and maintains a constant recruitment effort to keep itself up to strength.

Formed in 3045, the 10th FedCom was stationed on the world of Royal in the Draconis March until the Clan Invasion when it was re-assigned as a reserve unit against any Clan Jade Falcon or Clan Steel Viper breakout. After the Battle of Tukayyid, the RCT would move to Pandora and protect the supply depot located there.[1] When the Lyran Alliance was formed Katherine Steiner-Davion issued Archon's Order 5730023 and officially renamed the 10th FedCom to the 5th Alliance Guards and moved it to Fort Loudon to act as a raiding unit into the Jade Falcon and Steel Viper Occupation Zones. There they would work alongside the 4th Davion Guards, another raiding unit in a "antagonistic" relationship.[2]

During the opening stages of the FedCom Civil War, on December 2nd 3062 the 4th Davion Guards would be ordered by the 5th Alliance Guard's commander Lieutenant-General James Ito to relocate to a new base located 1,500 kilometers away from their old one, in an effort to separate the Fourth from its small support of anti-Katrina protesters. By December 7th the 4th Davion had not yet begun to move when Lieutenant-General James Ito ordered the 4th Davion Guards commander, General Alberta Orsina to step down and be replaced. Orsina refused and launched a strike against the 5th Lyran Guards. Fighting would continue inconclusively until Feburary 3rd 3063 when the 4th Davion Guards withdrew, but left special forces units to occupy the 5th Alliance Guard. [3] These special forces units, led by Major Lawrence Montkreith of the 177th FedCom Mechanized Infantry would launch raids and sabotage missions against the 5th Alliance Guards, culminating first in the successful destruction of the Fifth's main supply depot, and later in a much less successful attack against General Ito.[4] By late December, 3064 after ending resistance activities on Fort Louden the Fifth would move to Blue Diamond to convince the 4th Lyran Regulars to enter the war on the loyalist side when it was learned the 4th Davion Guards were on nearby Dalkeith. General Ito decided to stop trying to convince neutral units to enter the war and moved his RCT to Dalkeith.[5] The 5th Alliance Guards arrived on Dalkeith on December 2nd, 3064 and its arrival swung the advantage to the loyalist side and put the Allied forces on the defensive. By March 6th, 3065 the 5th had broken through the last defensive line only to learn that the rest of the allied forces had withdrawn earlier into the nearby badlands where the allied forces had moved to rearm and repair their forces. Scouts sent in were mauled badly by the Deneb Light Cavalry and the 4th Davion Guards, and by April 4th the Loyalist forces, now under General Ito's command began to advance along a broad front. By April 19th the Loyalists had arrived Point du Raz only to discover that the Allied Forces had withdrawn once again to the nearby Continent of Rockmeir. [6]

After a month of preparation, the Loyalist forces using DropShips began to ferry troops to the Rockmeir Continent when the command staff of the 13th Donegal Guards was killed when their DropShip went down. The Thirteenth Donegal, already badly mauled in the fighting was folded into the 5th Alliance Guard. The Allied Forces had not been idle during the last month and had built a series of defensive positions and supply caches around the old capitol of Newhaven. The 3rd Royal Guards made an initial push but was forced to pull back until the 5th Alliance Guards could move up and join them. Unable to mount an effective siege the Third Royal Guards and the 5th Alliance Guards withdrew to their own positions and began to plan their next move. In mid December the two Loyalist units launched their attack against the Allied Forces, but the Third Royal Guards while pursuing the Deneb Light Cavalry found themselves caught in a trap. The Third Royal Guards had walked into a minefield and then was boxed in by artillery and missile-delivered FASCAM, soon after conventional artillery began to bombard the trapped unit. The Third Royal Guards lost a quarter of its strength before it could withdraw. Seeing that they would be facing two opponents instead of one, the Fifth Alliance Guards canceled their phase of the attack. [7]

For the next two months the Loyalist and Allied forces raided each other as neither had the strength to destroy the other. On April 11th, 3066 the Loyalist forces using their entire strength struck at the Allied Forces in Newhaven and were able to advance 25 kilometers into the defensive works, but took heavy casualties doing so and on April 17th a strike by the Deneb Light Cavalry caused the Loyalist Forces to break and retreat in disarray. The Deneb Light Cavalry gave chase but was caught in a surprise attack when the 26th Lyran Guards, newly arrived from Port Moseby made an orbital drop on the Deneb Light Cavalry and between the Third Royal Guards. The 5th Alliance Guards, and the Twenty-sixth Lyran Guards were able to effectively destroy the Light Cavalry force, leaving just the 4th Davion Guards and combined arms battalion of the Deneb Light Cavalry in Newhaven.[8]

On September 27th 3066 the Loyalist forces made a three pronged assault on the 4th Davion Guards positions in Newhaven, the 4th were able to destroy the Third Royal Guards but was caught shortly after between the 26th Lyran and 5th Alliance while attempting to complete their breakout and were destroyed.[9]

After the FedCom Civil War the 5th Alliance Guards remained on Dalkeith at about half strength, the portions of the Thirteenth Donegal Guards integrated into the 5th reassigned to form the core of a new Thirteenth Donegal Guards regiment. [10]

During the early Jihad the Fifth was assigned to garrison the Lyran Alliance/Clan Jade Falcon border. Though successful in defending the Alliance, they did suffer losses in the constant raiding. By 3079 however they had relocated to the Free Worlds League border, garrisoning New India and Timbuktu.[11]

After the end of the Jihad, the Fifth Alliance Guards were used to form two new units: The 1st Bolan Guards and the 2nd Buena Guards.[12]

Leutnant-General James Ito commands the 5th Alliance Guards in 3050[13], and pilots a captured Clan Thor which has been named "Hammerfist". The 5th Alliance Armor Brigade is commanded by Colonel Ronald Braco, and the 5th Alliance Infantry Brigade is commanded by Colonel Karami Mohammed.[2]

The 5th Alliance Guards and before that the 10th FedCom trained in small unit operations, raiding, and precision drops from orbit.[2]

  • When the 5th Alliance Guards was a member of the Federated Commonwealth Corp RCTs, the 10th primarily used the FedCom Corps crest as their insignia. After being renamed to the they changed it to show a pair of crossed broadswords in front of the Alliance's mailed fist.
  • The parade colors of the Fifth, is the same as when it was a member of the FedCom Corps, navy blue with gold banding on the arms and legs of 'Mechs. Gold is also used to highlight panels on the upper torsos of 'Mechs and turrets of armor units, resulting in a checkerboard pattern. After being renamed, the color scheme was changed to a brown and tan paint scheme and black edging.
