Austen Roderick was a Freeborn warrior of Clan Wolf and one of first-generation members of Wolf's Dragoons.[1]

History[edit]

Austen Roderick was from the planet Tranquil, became a Freeborn MechWarrior of Clan Wolf, and was recruited to join into Wolf's Dragoons expedition to the Inner Sphere. He joined Delta Regiment for three years, until the battle of New Aragon in 3008. When his lance was decimated and his commander, Colonel Travis King, was killed, Roderick fled, and for that was arrested and charged of desertion. On 11 April, he was put into a jail with three other arrested Dragoons and received a visit from Delta's new leader, Major Sarah Weisz, who told them that, in place of execution, they would be transferred to Zeta Battalion under the unit's leader, Colonel Frank Wells. Zeta was ordered to open the way to brake the Capellan lines, through a area called El Diablo Pass, for which Roderick and and his three other cell mates would comprise the lance to spearhead it.[1]

Despite having little time to train his new unit, Austen Roderick and his lance lead the way for Zeta. The terrain was rough, but the opposition, minimal: only a recon lance of Waco Rangers. The defenders did all what they could to delay them, igniting fires in the forest and making hit and run attacks. Roderick advanced, and between him and another of his lancemates, they caught and tore apart a Rangers' 'Mech, a Wasp, though the pilot ejected.

Roderick's lance accomplished his mission without any losses, but one of his lancemates, Barum Diaz, accidentally stepped on the Wasp pilot, which happened to be John Waco, son of the Rangers' leader, Wayne Waco. For what he saw as his only son's murder, Wayne and his unit swore a Death Oath, becoming the sworn enemies of the Dragoons until they themselves were annihilated, though not before causing terrible losses to the Dragoons in the battle of First Harlech.[1]
