Luther Weisskopf was a senior Lyran Commonwealth naval officer and commander of Hesperus II's naval defenses by the end of 2787.[1]

When the Draconis Combine launched Operation BROKEN BLADE against Hesperus II following Lyran raids on Luthien and Dieron, its fleet was surprised to find Admiral Weisskopf's thirty WarShips, fifty assault DropShips, and twenty aerospace fighter carriers waiting in orbit to defend the world. Reacting to the Combine's wedge formation, already used to great success against the Lyran defenders of Skondia, Weisskopf arranged his fleet in ranks, with the heavier vessels in front and ready to force an engagement between them and any Combine ships trying to break through. Unlike the defenders of Skondia, Weisskopf also ordered his ships to focus on bringing down the Combine's heaviest vessels rather than on eliminating ground troop transports. Without the cover of their best ships, the Combine ground forces successfully made landfall but had to do so far from their planned deployment areas.[1]
By the middle of January 2788, the Combine's fleet was down to twelve WarShips and the Eighteenth Dieron Regulars had been destroyed, with the only major Lyran loss being the destruction of Hesperus II's orbital stations at the behest of the Combine's enraged commander. Weisskopf allowed the retreating Combine vessels to leave without pursuit and, for the next twenty years, no more large engagements occurred between the Lyran Commonwealth and Draconis Combine.[1]
Weisskopf would continue to command Hesperus II's orbital defenses until 2789, when an unspecified illness made it necessary for him to transfer command to Fleet Admiral Oscar F. Dewey.[2]
