History

The Second Lyran Guards were not intended to participate in planetary assaults. Instead they arrived on a world after most of the fighting was complete in order to lead occupation forces. This contributed to their unique makeup: The Second Lyran Guards of 2750 consisted of three battalions and each battalion consisted of two companies of Firestarter BattleMechs supported by one company of Hunchback 'Mechs. These 'Mechs were seen as most useful in garrisoning an occupied territory.[1]

In 2746 the Second deployed to Gustrell. Gustrell was an independent world that was located inside the Rim Worlds Republic's borders. The LIC found evidence that a mercenary unit under contract to Gustrell's planetary government was responsible for a brutal assault on a Lyran research station in the Dark Nebula. The Second was deployed to Gustrell in retaliation. The Second quickly destroyed the armor and infantry units that garrisoned Gustrell, and in two days had captured the planet's senate building. The Guard's action became known as the "Gustrell Massacre" after images of burned infantrymen were broadcast throughout the Inner Sphere. The Second remained on world until a Rim Worlds Republic garrison force could arrive. During that time the LIC completed their investigation and discovered that the mercenaries that had prompted the invasion operated on their own, without aid or comfort from the Gustrell planetary government.[1]

They defended Port Moseby against DCMS-forces in 2789. The 2nd defeated the attacking Kurita forces using Firestarter-BattleMechs. However, they were destroyed later that year, when the DCMS staged a second attack against the Planet. [2] Elements of the 2nd Lyran Guards were included into the 30th Lyran Guards, which is nicknamed "Walking Hellfire" after the defunct 2nd Guards. [3]

Eventually rebuilt after its destruction on Port Moseby, the elite ranked 2nd Lyran Guards supported their then commander Leutnant-General Claudius Steiner in staging a coup to remove Melissa Nin from the Archonship in 2845. The 2nd performed a combat drop on Tharkad City, defeating elements of the defending 3rd Lyran Guards [4]

Officers

  • Colonel Alexandra Walker was the CO at the time of the unit's destruction on Port Moseby.

Game Rules

In 2750 the Second Lyran Guards consists solely of Hunchback and Firestarter BattleMechs. Therefore there is no need to roll on the Random Assignment Tables. Furthermore, lances consist of only one of these two units (all Firestarters or all Hunchbacks). However at the company level (and higher) the unit alternates 'Mech type by lance. The Second Lyran Guard are also skilled in anti-infantry operations and therefore ignore the +1 to hit modifier for attacking infantry. PRG characters attached to the Second Lyran Guards receive a -3 TP reputation trait that affects their interactions with characters from the Star League or Rim Worlds Republic.[5]
