Description

The Luftenburg was a class of wet navy supercarriers constructed by the Lyran Commonwealth at the beginning of the early 28th Century. These massive 100,000 ton ships were the largest active carriers known to exist. Primarily created for strategic operations on planets which have large oceans, these ships can provide mobile air support and limited artillery fire support for land and sea operations.

Each Luftenburg can carry over 140 aircraft, including: 100 Aerospace or conventional fighter craft, 20 VTOL, and 20 conventional or medium support aircraft. The ships were also designed to transport a mix of 1,000 tons of heavy and 2,000 tons of light combat vehicles. They also provide medical support with its surgical theaters for injured personnel.

These ships were in active service to House Steiner until the end of the 30th Century, when they were mothballed due to loss of advanced technology. After the Clan Invasion, the Lyran Alliance was able to return some of these ships back to service.[1][2]

At least one Luftenburg was destroyed on Tharkad by orbital fire.[3]

Armament & Capabilities

The class is armed with pair of Long Tom Artillery cannons on its bow for fire support of land forces and carries 100 rounds of ammunition for these guns. For defense against submerged threats such as submarines and other vehicles, the ship has a number of Long Range Torpedo launchers mounted in all its firing arcs. It also mounts nine Large Lasers, six Mediums lasers, and eight Twenty-tube Long Range Missile Launchers with over 40 tons of ammunition for close in defense. These weapons are guided by an Advanced Fire Control system, giving them accurate targeting capacities, while ammunition is stored in CASE containers. Additional equipment includes MASH facilities, field kitchens, Communication Equipment, minesweeper equipment, 140 lifeboats and 12 searchlights. Accommodations are provided by 320 passenger quarters, 120 second-class quarters, and 40 first-class passenger quarters. For flight operations the ship features lift hoists and flight doors and sprayers for firefighting duties.[4]

Cargo

  • 15,000 tons 100 fighters bays - 6 doors (2 Front/2 per side)
  • 1,000 tons 20 light vehicles - 2 doors (Rear)
  • 2,000 tons 20 heavy vehicles - 2 doors (Rear)
  • 8,119 tons standard [cargo] (body) - 4 doors (2 Left / 2 Right)
  • 11,500 tons insulated liquids - 2 doors (Rear)

(10,000 tons aircraft fuel, Body)

  • 1,150 tons insulated liquid - 2 doors (Left/Right)(

(1,000 potable water, Body)

Known Ships of the Class

Thirteen ships of the Lutherberg Class were constructed on various Lyran worlds for wet navy support.[5]

  • TNS Luftenburg - Lead ship of class commission in 2741.
  • TNS Gerthr - First ship of the class to be recommissioned since the Succession Wars in 3055. The ship recommissioned after receiving lengthy refit made possible by re-discovery advance technologies. It is unclear if this ship survived the Blake invasion of Tharkad during the early years of the Jihad.[6]
  • DNS Steadfast - Ship of of the Donegal Navy, last ship of the Class to be decommission & mothballed during the Succession Wars in 2920.

Note

No record sheets have been produced for this ship. Rules to construct ship can be found in Tactical Operations.

Its believed that TNS Gerthr is the Luftenburg that survived the Blakist occupation of Tharkad, escaping the fate of the three Jormungand cruisers also based at Tharkad.[7]
