Planetary History
One of a number of colony worlds established by the Marian Hegemony in the years before the Clan Invasion, the world of Marius' Tears (or Marius's Tears, as recorded in some places) was originally named Herculaneum. Settled under the auspices of the colonisation programme headed up by the son of the then-Imperator Marius O'Reilly, Sean O'Reilly, the world was renamed after Imperator Marius died in what was officially determined to be a climbing accident on Herculaneum in 3048. Herculaneum was renamed to Marius' Tears by Sean O'Reilly immediately before or during the 10-day morning period for his father, which was in turn followed immediately by Sean's assumption of the title Caesar. Marius' death on Herculaneum came at a critical time for Sean O'Reilly; as head of the Marian colony programme, Sean had been embezzling colonisation funds to support his gambling habit and a number of mistresses, and it was shortly after Sean's illicit activities had been revealed to the Imperator that Marius died in the "climbing accident".[18]
