Description

The Raiden is a battle armor design that hails from the Draconis Combine. It is essentially the Combine's take on the Inner Sphere Standard, though the Standard was still being produced in the Kurita realm at the time. Greatly aided by the prize they won on Wolcott, the Combine's battle armor development program gave birth to the Raiden, as well as the lighter Kage and heavier Kanazuchi. When the first Raiden prototype was presented to the Coordinator in 3052, it was armed with a Small Laser in its right arm and shoulder-mounted single-shot SRM launcher. While it boasted enough armor to survive hits from missiles and medium lasers, the Coordinator commanded the director to improve armor coverage so that it could survive a direct blast from a Large Laser and still remain mobile.[8]

The director was informed that he would be piloting the test suit, despite the fact that the septuagenarian had neither the training nor strength to properly control the suit. The design team removed the prototype's missile launcher in order to provide the necessary armor. Following the successful test, the director suffered only five broken bones and spent a month in the hospital; he was promoted to head of the Internal Security Force's research department after recovering from his wounds.[8] The director died the following year and received an honor guard composed of Raiden-suited troopers.

Compared to other early Inner Sphere designs, the Raiden came equipped with jump jets, a feature which others lacked. The Raiden is both stronger and more agile than the Standard design, making it superior in hand-to-hand fighting.[8]

Weapons and Equipment

Like the Inner Sphere Standard, the Raiden has a modular weapon mount that can accept a Small Laser, Flamer or Machine Gun to accommodate for preference or mission parameters. It lacks the missile launcher and anti-personnel weapon mount of the Elemental Battle Armor, though it has the same jump capacity of ninety meters and also mounts a Battle Claw that enables it to hitch a ride on an OmniMech and make anti-'Mech attacks. Raidens were later equipped with the Tsunami Heavy Gauss Rifles, and during the FedCom Civil War, engineers perfected a single tube Medium Range Missile launcher with four reloads for the Raiden.[9]

Variants

  • Anti-Infantry
Equipped with a Vibro-Claw, Flamer, and Machine Gun, this variant is fearsome in urban combat and devastating to conventional infantry platoons.[10] BV (2.0) = 47[11]
  • Raiden II (Flamer)
The Raiden II series was based on a standard Raiden whose armor was replaced with Reflective Armor. This version carried a Flamer. BV (2.0) = 50[12]
  • Raiden II (HMG)
This updated Raiden uses Reflective Armor and carries a Heavy Machine Gun. BV (2.0) = 51[13]
