Although the Vincent was constructed by the Terran Hegemony, other nations would field the Vincent in varying quantities; the Federated Suns deployed ten Mk. 39s during the Case AMBER ambush at Tentativa during the Reunification War, although the AFFS fleet took heavy casualties during the battle, and varying numbers would stay in service even with the general disarmament of the Star League era. In 2765 the Capellan Confederation was operating three Vincents amongst its thirty-six strong WarShip fleet while the Draconis Combine Admiralty was fielding another four, and both the Federated Suns and the Lyran Commonwealth were operating five each at the same point in time. Even the Duchy of Andurien was operating a single Vincent at this time, as was the Taurian Concordat - the only Periphery nation to be operating a ship of her class.
The Vincents four Luxor-10 Series NAC/10's and two Barracuda Missile Tubes, carrying 200 rounds NAC/10 ammo and 10 Barracuda Missiles, give it credible anti-WarShip firepower, especially because corvettes usually fight as squadrons. The eight Thunderbolt Large Lasers only provide minimal deterrent against attacking Aerospace Fighters however.

Notes
 +
* Over 500 Vincents were built over a service time spanning centuries, making this a very common corvette class. Yet, at the same time, the Vincent is the odd man out in the corvette family, being almost twice the size of the next biggest known corvette class (the Bonaventure); arguably with the size of a small destroyer only its relatively weak armament warrants its classification as a corvette. Designed in a time before the invention of the docking hardpoint system for DropShips, the Vincent notably sports tremendous cargo capacity, suggesting it may have doubled as an armed transport in addition to its duties as a patrol and picket craft. The vast storage capacity could also conceivably serve to keep the Vincent supplied for very long independent operation.

Description[edit]

Being surrounded by hostile realms, the Hegemony Armed Forces recognized the need for a small, powerful craft to patrol the approaches to Hegemony worlds and could delay any intruders, which eventually resulted in the Vincent-class corvette.[6]

After years of making do with a massive volume of automated surveillance satellites and four-ship patrol squadrons to balance the abilities and weaknesses of its Bonaventure and Vigilant Class corvettes, which still failed to stall the successful invasion of Terra Firma by the Capellan Confederation in 2409, the Terran Hegemony commissioned a new corvette with double the previous detection-capability, sizable firepower and flexibility to allow future advances.[6] The commissioning of the new corvette was paid for partly out of reparations from the Capellan Confederation after the Hegemony recaptured Terra Firma, and among the specifications for the new design were three key requirements: enough firepower to threaten any intruder, detection capabilities with twice the range of any corvette in service at the time, and the growth potential to incorporate future advances.[6]

A small manufacturer of military transport vessels based on Capella known as Delhi Ships submitted a design that would become the Vincent corvette; while Delhi Ships was based outside the Hegemony, the company agreed to build a new shipyard above Carver IV[7] to handle the manufacturing of the new corvettes and maintain the required security over restricted Hegemony technology and to take payment in the same L-Bills being paid in reparations to the Hegemony government. Delhi Ships went on to become Delhi WarShips, a major defense contractor for the Star League,[6] although their later Soyal-class heavy cruiser would be far less successful than the much smaller Vincent.[8]

Introduced to service in 2432,[1][9] two primary features set the Vincent apart from previous Hegemony corvettes: its size, almost twice that of previous designs, and the use of what the designers called "smart modularity", which was Delhi Ships' attempt to confer with other contractors to standardize ship fittings and systems. The large size of the class and smart modularity were key to the ship's longevity, allowing the relatively roomy Vincent to accommodate future technological advances[6] and ensuring the 530 Vincents manufactured[10] in the three centuries prior to the Amaris Civil War enjoyed considerable longevity, serving with the HAF, SLDF, and even the Clan toumans.[1][9]

Although the Vincent was constructed by the Terran Hegemony, other nations would field the Vincent in varying quantities; the Federated Suns deployed ten Mk. 39s during the Case AMBER ambush at Tentativa during the Reunification War, although the AFFS fleet took heavy casualties during the battle,[11] and varying numbers would stay in service even with the general disarmament of the Star League era. In 2765 the Capellan Confederation was operating three Vincents amongst its thirty-six strong WarShip fleet[12] while the Draconis Combine Admiralty was fielding another four,[13] and both the Federated Suns[14] and the Lyran Commonwealth were operating five each at the same point in time.[15] Even the Duchy of Andurien was operating a single Vincent at this time,[16] as was the Taurian Concordat - the only Periphery nation to be operating a ship of her class.[17]

Just prior to the Amaris Coup, the Mark 39 was the most common model in use, carrying two Howser 2G2 "Hotfire" engines with their powerful thrust giving the class great swiftness and maneuverability. In 2773, Delhi personnel smuggled the plans for the Vincent and Essex I ships to their Capellan production lines and resumed production for the Capellan navy, despite protests from both Emperor Stefan Amaris and SLDF Commanding General Aleksandr Kerensky. With both Amaris and Kerensky unable to do more than complain, and with the Carver system under siege, Delhi manufactured substantial numbers of both ship classes for the Confederation, bolstering the size of the Capellan navy substantially.[18]

Armament and Equipment[edit]

The Vincent's four Luxor-10 Series NAC/10's and two Barracuda Missile Tubes, carrying 200 rounds NAC/10 ammo and 20 Barracuda Missiles, give it credible anti-WarShip firepower, especially because corvettes usually fight as squadrons.[1][6][9] The eight Thunderbolt Large Lasers only provide a minimal deterrent against attacking aerospace fighters, however.

One of the many outdated iterations of the Vincent, the Mk. 38 (or Mark XXXVIII in official documentation) lacked the Mk. 39s Ulsop AI Surveillance Computer. The Mk. 38 had half of the detection range of the Mk. 39, owing to the system's advanced data gathering and interpreting.[6]
  • Mark 42
The model unveiled in 2997 and in use with Clans during the initial invasion of the Inner Sphere differs little from the Mark 39. An increase in bay personnel bunks owing to the increase in fighters to match the Clan doctrine of a Star is noted, as is an upgrade to the latest in armor technology (through a reduction in raw tonnage to 76 tons of Lamellor Ferro-Carbide). The most notable changes were the addition of a Lithium-Fusion Battery System and Clan HarJel-based hull-sealant technology. BV (1.0) = 21,271[1][19]

Named Vessels[edit]

Notes[edit]

  • Over 500 Vincents were built over a service time spanning centuries, making this a very common corvette class.
