The Arctic Fox is a light OmniMech reverse engineered by the Kell Hounds from the Clan Uller OmniMech with assistance in the final stages from Clan Wolf-in-Exile.[1]

Description[edit]

Receiving first hand experience against the OmniMechs of the Clan invaders on Verthandi, Twycross and during the climatic fighting on Draconis Combine capital of Luthien, the Kell Hounds quickly realized the value in a reconfigurable 'Mech on the modern battlefield. To this end, Grand Duke Morgan Kell made sure some of the Clan-tech salvage the Hounds received in the wake of the Battle of Luthien, and specifically examples of the 30-ton Uller reached Arc-Royal MechWorks with the goal of cloning that specific machine. Though making significant progress, the finished Arctic Fox only walked off the production line after the arrival of Phelan Kell and Clan Wolf-in-Exile technical advisors on Arc-Royal.[1]

Though having access to Clan technology via the Exiled Wolves and even adopting the Clan practice of referring to the 'Mech by name alone rather than using its model number, the Kell Hounds mandated the Arctic Fox be built exclusively around Inner Sphere technology. This decision was made on both logistic and strategic grounds, ensuring Clan material could be funneled to maintaining the Hounds' captured Clan machines instead, as well ensuring that the various "training farm" units and defensive regiments within the newly formed Arc-Royal Defense Cordon that could benefit from such a versatile design but lacked access to Clan-tech could afford the 'Mech.[1]

Appearing most prominently among the various Kell Hound regiments, the Arctic Fox has notably also been seen in the ranks of the Blue Star Irregulars and the Dioscuri. A number of Wolf-in-Exile garrison warriors desperate for the flexiability of even a Inner Sphere OmniMech over the fixed weapons loadout of second-line Clan-tech machine have also adopted the 'Mech.[1]

Weapons and Equipment[edit]

Structurally closely matching the Uller, the Arctic Fox is a powerful light 'Mech that has a top speed of 97.2 km/h that is provided by a GM 180 XL engine, shaving off valuable weight from the Arctic Fox's base chassis while also making the 'Mech vulnerable to becoming a combat kill through the loss of one of its side torsos. The Arctic Fox has 10 double heat sinks which are generally enough to handle the 'Mech's heat load, with the ability to add more if needed. The most notable difference between the Uller, the Arctic Fox has six tons of standard Royal-7 armor plate rather than the four tons of Ferro-Fibrous of its Clan progenitor.[1]

With two extra tons devoted to armor, the Arctic Fox features only fourteen tons of Pod space so the standardized configurations play to the 'Mech's strengths and the limitations of Inner Sphere weaponry rather than attempt to directly replicate those of the Uller. The Primary configuration is intended to wear an enemy's armor down at long ranges and then close for the kill. To do this, the Arctic Fox carries an ER PPC that can hit a target at up to 690 meters. For close combat, two medium lasers provide the primary hitting power while two SRM-4 launchers seek out weak points in an enemy's armor.[1]

Alternate Configurations[edit]

  • Alternate Configuration B
Useful in anti-aircraft and in vehicle hunting roles, the B configuration has an LB 10-X Autocannon as its primary weapon. This is backed up by a medium laser. This configuration is highly flexible in its roles but also severely handicapped by its reliance on a ballistic weapon. BV (1.0) = 634[7], BV (2.0) = 735[1][8]
  • Alternate Configuration C
Another sniper and cleanup 'Mech rolled into one, the C configuration mounts an ER PPC as its primary weapon, giving it superb long range firepower. This is matched up with a large pulse laser, which has a much shorter range but is extremely accurate. BV (1.0) = 747[9], BV (2.0) = 948[1][10]
  • Alternate Configuration D
A dedicated fire support configuration, the D configuration carries two LRM-10 launchers linked to an Artemis IV fire control system for greater missile accuracy. BV (1.0) = 643[11], BV (2.0) = 744[1][12]
  • Alternate Configuration E
Produced during the Jihad, this configuration employs pair of ER medium lasers in left torso, while fitting pair of light PPCs in each arm actuator slot. BV (1.0) = ??, BV (2.0) = 1,094[13]
  • Alternate Configuration F
Another Jihad era configuration, this configuration is set up for a fire support mission. Each arm slot has an MML-7 launcher with two tons of ammunition. Mounted in the left torso, the 'Mech has three ER medium lasers. BV (2.0) = 891[14]

Design Quirks[edit]

The Arctic Fox has the following Design Quirk:[16][17]

Related OmniMechs[edit]

  • Kit Fox - The Arctic Fox is based mainly on Kit Fox OmniMechs salvaged from the battlefields of Luthien.

Notes[edit]

  • In German products, the unit's proper name was translated to Polarfuchs. The model code was accordingly changed to PF1.
