Giving up the Ghost, subtitled Fortunes of War #1, is an original short story by Bryan Young. The story is the first entry in the Fortunes of War digital short-story series announced by Catalyst Game Labs as unlockable stretch goals for the crowdfunding campaign for the BattleTech: Mercenaries boxset. Giving up the Ghost was the $200,000 USD stretch goal and was unlocked free to all backers for the campaign, made available for download on 3 May 2023.

After fighting off the Jade Falcons on Carsphairn, The Wolfhounds–the 2nd Company of the Second Kell Hounds Regiment, known as “The Scrapping Pack”–find out rather abruptly that the Kell Hounds are disbanding and struggle to meet that challenge by adopting a new unit persona.
