Unit Description
XLVIII Corps (or the Forty-eighth Corps) was one of the seventy-two Corps that made up the Star League Defense Force. Prior to the collapse of the Star League XLVIII Corps was a fairly large corps consisting of seven divisions and ten independent regiments.[1]
History
In 2764 XLVIII Corps was part of the 17th Army assigned to the Magistracy of Canopus Territorial State. The SLDF High Command wanted to assign more reconnaissance units to the Forty-eighth, but were unable to do so.[2] The Forty-eighth garrisoned the spinward portion of the Magistracy. The unit's biggest challenge was morale: Many of the soldiers of the Forty-eighth didn't respect their commanding officer, who they viewed as an Magistracy apologist.[3]
When the simmering violence and rebellion building in the Periphery erupted with the New Vandenberg Uprising and subsequent Periphery-wide uprising in 2765 XLVIII Corps were swept up in the violence along with the rest of the 17th Army.[1]
XLVIII Corps lost several divisions in the Periphery conflict; one of these, the Pride of Pittsburgh, was disbanded as a result of heavy losses, and elements of the division went on to join the Capellan Confederation. The 11th Hussar Regiment was also lost, although through defection to the rebel side rather than combat.[1]
By the end of the Hegemony Campaign XLVIII Corps had lost two more independent regiments and another division in combat, while the 38th Jump Infantry Division took heavy enough losses that it was disbanded by 2784. When General Aleksandr Kerensky led the bulk of the SLDF on the Exodus both surviving divisions within XLVIII Corps followed him, as did two of the independent regiments, but several regiments chose to remain in the Inner Sphere. The 1894th Light Horse and the 8th Striker regiments joined the Federated Suns, while the 205th Heavy Assault Regiment joined the Lyran Commonwealth.[1]
