The Wernke system was home to at least one habitable world, Wernke III, and an inhabited moon, Talon, and as of 3145 was located in the Sirdar Operational Area of the Capellan March within the Federated Suns.[2][3]

System Description[edit]

Wernke is located near the Gruyeres and Hobbs systems[4] and consists of a class G0V primary orbited by at least three planets. During the thirty-first century, recharge stations were in place at the system nadir and zenith jump points.[1]

System History[edit]

The Wernke system was settled during or shortly after the First Exodus from Terra.[5] Despite the planet Wernke III having been settled first and having the far greater population, Wernke III's importance relative to its moon, Talon, and the convention that star systems are commonly recorded on maps using the name of the most significant colony within that system caused some confusion amidst cartographers and other groups outside the Federated Suns, leading to the system sometimes being marked as the Talon system rather than the Wernke system.[1]

Wernke III, more commonly known simply as Wernke, is the third planet in the Wernke system and has a single inhabited and heavily industrialized moon named Talon.[1]

Planetary History[edit]

Early History[edit]

By 2305, Wernke was considered to be a client state of the Capellan Hegemony, but in a sign of events to come the Capellan interests on Wernke were already being contested diplomatically by various mercantile interests backed by the Davion family. This highlighted the biggest internal problem suffered by the Capellan Hegemony—just how far-flung the borders of the Hegemony were, outside of the Hegemony core systems.[5]

The Jihad[edit]

During the thirty-first century, Wenke's three major continents were dominated by farming and ranching, but by the latter half of the century the island of Tonkya was shrouded in mystery; publicly, it was the site of Kallon Industries mining operations, but the entire continent had been placed off limits, including a 100 km buffer zone around the continent. Despite this, Tonkya bustled with DropShip activity going to and from Tonkya, AFFS Fort Samson Wood, the Kallon HQ spaceport at Hamish and Talon, with arrivals and departures occurring at any time of the day or night. The remainder of Wernke remained largely undeveloped in manufacturing terms, with those factories on the planet directly involved in supporting the Kallon facilities on Talon. The Colonel Jamison Hasek Spaceport handled the majority of the world's trade, with the spaceport subject to nearly constant traffic all year-round.[1][39]

Geography[edit]

Wernke has three major continents—named Crimeia, Jal, and Vesper—and at least one smaller continent, the island of Tonkya. Wernke is an agricultural world, supplying other worlds throughout the rimward region of the Capellan March with food. The continents of Crimeia, Jal, and Vesper are all temperate continents, but Tonkya is a mountainous island with no arable land.[1]

Planetary Locations[edit]

  • Colonel Jamison Hasek Spaceport: spaceport located on Crimeia near Hamish and connected to the planetary capital by highways and maglev lines[1]
  • Hamish: the planetary capital, located on Crimeia[1]

Talon is the large, barren but heavily industrialized moon of Wernke III. Talon lacks arable lands and potable water, but the barren and craggy surface of the moon contains significant deposits of various rare metals.[1]

Planetary History[edit]

Succession Wars[edit]

While opinion is divided on whether Talon is Wernke's moon or Wernke's smaller sister, Talon's importance to the Federated Suns was indisputable for much of its history. The terrain on Wernke is similar to that found on the industrial world of Hesperus II in the Lyran Commonwealth, and as a result Talon was chosen to be the location of the largest and most prestigious manufacturing facility owned by Kallon Weapon Industries anywhere in the Inner Sphere, located deep in the Kulmen Mountains. Due to the arid nature of Talon, food for the population had to be imported from Wernke, and the population was limited to employees and family of the Kallon factory and various mining concerns.[1]

Due to the importance of the Kallon Industries plant and its contribution to the AFFS Talon was attacked numerous times during the Succession Wars by both the Capellan Confederation and the Taurian Concordat.[1]

FedCom Civil War[edit]

During the FedCom Civil war, two RCTs squared off against each other over control of Talon; the Twenty-second Avalon Hussars secured the Kallon plants and held them in the face of repeated attacks from the Seventh FedCom RCT, proving the strength of the defenses in place yet again.[1]

The Jihad[edit]

The Kallon Industries plant was targeted specifically by the Word of Blake during the Jihad; the Blakists completely destroyed the plant in 3069.[40] It was reported in 3079 that the Kallon facilities had been so effectively destroyed[41] using nuclear weapons[42] that it would be at least another ten years before salvage teams could even contemplate investigating the remains of the facilities.[41]
