Description
Designed to fill the gap between the small Leopard CV and massive Vengeance, the Okinawa-class DropShip is capable of carrying 18 aerospace fighters.
Unlike most other fighter carriers, the Okinawa is a spheroid design, with its fighter bays arranged in a ring around the craft's midsection. The fighter bays all link to a central repair section in the middle, with the pilots quarters directly above, while the engineering crews are directly below, reducing access times. The Okinawa features suitable weaponry and armor for its size, originally featuring uniform protection now reinforced at the nose at the cost of the sides based on operational experience.
Armament
While relying upon its fighters to provide most of its offensive ability, the Okinawa is reasonably well armed. The nose features paired ER Large Lasers, an ER PPC and, Large Pulse Laser, twin Medium Pulse Lasers and Artemis IV FCS enhanced LRM-20 and SRM-6 racks, supported by ER large laser, ER PPC, medium pulse laser and LRM-20 and SRM-6 racks on each upward side. The aft quarters feature a single ER and Pulse large laser and an LRM-10, with a single large pulse laser, LRM-10 rack and twin Streak SRM-2 launchers mounted directly aft.
Cargo
The Okinawa's fighter bays are capable of carrying 18 fighters, split between a larger 12 fighter capacity bay and secondary 6 fighter bay. Located around the craft's midsection, these bays are deserving of note for serving to both launch and recover fighters, instead of the separate launch and landing bays like most other carriers. Beyond the fighter bays, the Okinawa also has a single 297 ton bay for stores.
Variants
- Block I
- The original version of the Okinawa, produced from early 3055 to April 3056, featured almost uniform armor placement over its hull. Postcombat reports of the DCS Ashi-oto's performance during a raid against Clan Smoke Jaguar held Luzerne led to the revised "nose" first arrangement.
