History

First Draconis Combine/Ghost Bear War

Caripare/Itabaiana

As a part of Rho Galaxy the 283rd Battle Cluster were actively involved in the First Draconis Combine / Ghost Bear War, which began in 3062 with a suicidal attack by three regiments of the Alshain Avengers against Alshain. Rho Galaxy battled forces from Clan Nova Cat on both Caripare and Itabaiana,[1] fighting alongside forces from Tau Galaxy on the latter.[2][1]

Idlewind

The 283rd Battle Cluster were assigned to assault Idlewind as part of the second wave of the Dominion War, facing the Ninth Pesht Regulars; the commanding officer of the Ninth was killed early in the fighting and the Ninth lost all unit cohesion. More than 90% of the unit's soldiers were killed[3]

Garstedt

Clan Hell's Horses Invasion

Moving back into the Dominion as the Ghost Bears responded to the Clan Hell's Horses invasion prompted by Khan Vladimir Ward of Clan Wolf, elements of Rho were keen to see combat despite the Galaxy having taken a battering while fighting the Nova Cats. The warriors of the Eighteenth Battle Cluster actively sought an opportunity for revenge against the Horses because of the Eighteenth's defeat on Niles in 3048 and were rewarded with an opportunity to attack Engadin, only to discover when they arrived that the Hell's Horses ofrces had already fled. To compensate Rho for the perceived loss of honor the 283rd Battle Cluster was assigned to support the First Rasalhague Bears in the capture of Rasalhague from Clan Wolf, one part of the punishment meted out against Clan Wolf by the Ghost Bears in retaliation for Khan Ward's engineering of the Hell's Horses invasion.[1]

Officers

From 3061 the Commanding Officer was Star Colonel Marcus Gilmour[4] who continued to command the 283rd until at least as late as 3067.[5]

Tactics

Urban defense specialists. The Cluster was specialized in defensive tactics because of its long duty as a garrison force. The mobility of the command surprises the enemy often and its medium 'Mechs are used for flanking manuevers. Also not unknown to this unit were rear assaults, when possible. [6]

243rd Battle Cluster (Veteran/Fanatical)[5]

- At this point in time the 243rd was stationed on Leoben and was operating at just below three-quarters of full strength, with all bar fifteen percent of the Cluster using OmniMechs or equivalent technology.[5]

Notes

In the novel Test of Vengeance, by Bryan Nystul, the unit commanded by Marcus Gilmour as part of Rho Galaxy, is the 288th Battle Cluster: this is possibly an error[4].
