The Dark Age

The Draconis Combine attempted to raid Benedict in late 3139. The raid began well enough, with a JumpShip operated by the Draconis Combine Admiralty (DCA) jumping into the Benedict system and launched a Union-class DropShip towards Benedict, with a Condottiere Assault Craft acting as escorts to the DropShip. Things began going wrong when a Federated Suns JumpShip jumped into the Benedict system; the FedSuns JumpShip arrived close to the DCA JumpShip and promptly launched a Seeker-class DropShip, which promptly burned towards the surface of the planet with the DCA Condottiere in fast pursuit.[7]

As the Seeker approached Benedict the defense co-ordinator launched a pair of Condottieres to intercept the approaching Combine forces. Unfortunately for both sides, the three Condottieres involved in the engagement were all under lease from the manufacturer, Nimakachi Fusion Products Ltd. Included in the terms of the respective contracts with Nikamachi were mutual non-aggression clauses that Nikamachi included as standard at the time. The net result of this was all three Condottieres ignoring each other to instead concentrate their attacks on the opposing faction's DropShips. The Union launched fighters, as did Benedict's defense co-ordinator, and by the end of the engagement both DropShips were too heavily damaged to make planetfall. The actual battlefield performance of the Condottieres involved was unquestioned, but the incident caused a certain amount of embarassment and led to Nikamachi reforming their marketing of the assault ships.
