History[edit]
Daniel Brewer was named Duke of Hesperus II after his parents died in a VTOL accident in 3051. He was little more than a figurehead for Marshal Brandal Gareth's secret aspirations to create his own state. The Marshal seized the opportunity to "tutor" the young Duke Daniel, taking advantage of the boy's idealism and dream of becoming a MechWarrior. Gareth separated Brewer from the rest of his surviving family and secretly assumed control of Defiance Industries. Gareth launched what he dubbed "Operation EXCALIBUR", a plan to secede the Isle of Skye and create his own state, which he called "the Free Star Republic". Although the young duke dreamt of becoming a MechWarrior, Gareth only let him briefly pilot Defiance Industries' new prototype 'Mech Defiance during a presentation.
In 3057, when the Gray Death Legion attacked his factory from the inside, Brewer saw his opportunity. Using his great knowledge of the place, he infiltrated the factory to take the prototype and used it to attack the Legion. Damaged and weakened after combat, the Gray Death Legion was on the verge of defeat, with Brewer's attack helping make that defeat possible. However, in a desperate move, Lori Kalmar, the new leader of the Legion, dumped a bucket of molten metal over Brewer's 'Mech. With his 'Mech overheated, Brewer ejected inside the building, what was expected to be a suicide move. Incredibly, Brewer survived when his parachute caught on the roof supports, and he was rescued shortly afterwards. Katherine Steiner-Davion forgave him as Brewer did not have any knowledge of Gareth's plans, and he enlisted with the Gray Death Legion temporarily, making his dream of becoming a MechWarrior come true.
The Duke served in the Legion for seven years. By 3065 he reached the rank of captain. When the Gray Death Legion was sent in the middle of 3065 by Katherine Steiner-Davion to defend Hesperus II from the Skye Separatists during the FedCom Civil War, Brewer found himself in a difficult position. With the double role as CEO of DefHes and his position in the Legion, as the Hesperus board of directors considered him more loyal to the unit than to his company. They were also very hostile to the Legion owing to their attack on Hesperus II eight years earlier. However, Brewer did all he could to unite the two sides.[2]
Brewer distinguished himself when the Maglev train which the Legion was using to cross the planet came under attack by rebels, crashing and killing some legionnaires. Lori Kalmar was presumed killed and Davis McCall's 'Mech was crippled, so McCall placed Brewer in charge of the defense against the overwhelming Sky Separatist attack. Brewer managed to drive back the attackers, being commended by Lori after the battle.[3] Brewer survived the Legion's destruction, one of the few Legion's officers to do so. He incorporated the remnants of the Legion into Defiance Self-Protection Force. They would later become known as Brewer's Legion.[4]
Jihad[edit]
When the Blakists raided Hesperus for first time in 3068, at the beginning of the Jihad, Brewer called for more troops, but these fell on deaf ears as the Alliance was busy fighting in several fronts. On 3070, the Blakists attacked and seized the vital industrial world, but the Duke decided to stay, saying than he could do more good at home than on the run in the exile.[5]
The invaders placed Brewer under house arrest. While he occasionally would feign cooperation with the occupation, making public broadcasts calling for an end to violence and resistance, he also covertly stayed in touch with the LCAF and Devlin Stone through a hidden Black Box. Using his inside information to help coordinate the planet's liberation, Brewer was badly injured during the coalition assault on the world in 3074. Brewer directed his company to spend the next few years determining the extent of the damage that the Word had done to the facilities on their way out.[6] Brewer was badly injured during the liberation of Hesperus II, suffering fractures in his hip and femur which were complicated by infection. Brewer had still not fully recovered from his injuries by 3077, leaving him unable to pilot a BattleMech.[7]
After Hesperus II was liberated by Devlin Stone's coalition, Duke Brewer worked steadily to bring the full industrial capacity of the planet to bear for the Alliance. Initial reports indicated than damage was only superficial, but later it turned out than the Word had planted numerous booby traps, computer viruses, and other hidden surprises. Initially, the output of materiel was an all-time low, and things get worse by the day.[8]
Death and Legacy[edit]
Daniel carried the ignominious distinction of being the first Duke to lose Hesperus II to an invader.[9]
BattleMechs[edit]
Daniel Brewer piloted a Defiance BattleMech, the first prototype built, during the Gray Death Legion's assault on the factories of Hesperus II. Later, as a captain of the Legion, he piloted a Champion.[10][11]
Other Appearances[edit]
In the MechWarrior IV: Mercenaries computer game, due to timeline, the information states that Daniel Brewer worked in secret with Alexander Carlyle to rebuild the Gray Death Legion after their destruction on Hesperus II.
