With its Hesperus II facility the largest surviving single site BattleMech factory after the fall of the Star League, Defiance Industries was the foundation of the militaries of the Lyran Commonwealth, Federated Commonwealth, and Lyran Alliance.

Overview[edit]
With the opening shots of the Reunification War, the Star League reached an agreement with Archon Viola Steiner in 2577 to construct a factory jointly shared by both parties to ensure proper resupply of 'Mechs during the Periphery campaigns. To protect the factories from assault or sabotage, workers spent ten years hollowing out one of the Myoo Mountains of the South Whitman continent with the factories built inside.
With the fall of the Star League, control of Defiance Industries passed to the Lyran Commonwealth, who assigned control to the Brewer family who have ensured its prodigious production rate continues even with the technological decline of the Succession Wars and repeated attacks to knock it out. So important is the facility to Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces and the Lyran nation, nearly 14 attempts by other Successor States to capture or destroy it have been launched. To date, control of the factory has only been wrested from Lyran hands once, falling to the concentrated efforts of the Word of Blake during the Jihad.
The Furillo facilities however are much less storied. Formerly the Tolsand WarWorks, Defiance acquired the aging plant in 2992 and poured considerable funds into upgrading and updating the factory. Located near the city of Snohomish Springs in the shadow of the Mont Vert on the Dereka continent, the Furillo assembly lines are primarily configured to construct light and medium designs, leaving it overshadowed by the Hesperus II factories in the eyes of notoriously heavy LCAF forces, at least until the Blakist Jihad made it the temporary headquarters of the corporation.
The company's newest and most secretive production facility is its manufacturing annex on Kwangjong-ni. A former Rim Worlds Republic factory located underwater in the world's massive Lost Sea, Defiance spent considerable sums to locate and refurbish it to function. Acting as a production site for the company's R&D efforts, the Kwangjong-ni plant had three easily reconfigurable production lines which reached full production capacity during the Jihad. To protect it from both attack and prying eyes, the plant's actual location is kept top secret, large cargo subs carrying needed parts in and finished designs out the only method of reaching it, the subs' home port heavily defended by the planet's militia.[3]
History[edit]
Defiance Industries rose to prominence with the fall of the Star League. Archon Jennifer Steiner ordered Gerald Brewer, formerly the Star League's liaison to the Commonwealth government, to take control of the factories on behalf of the Commonwealth.[4] Since then, Defiance Industries of Hesperus II has been at the center of at least seventeen major battles for control of the world. Major attacks of the First Succession War were waged largely by massive WarShip fleets, but by 2837, the fortified location of the Defiance Industries facility, and the resulting ability to seal the doors and build fresh units to push back attackers, would become a key part of the planet's defenses.[5]
The factory's output was an immediate source of strength for the Commonwealth. In 2789, General Takashi Myoo of the Commonwealth Military Press estimated that Defiance Industries provided over 30% of the LCAF's BattleMech production, a number that only increased as other plants were destroyed in the devastation of the First Succession War.[6] By the end of the Third Succession War, Defiance Industries was unquestioned as the largest 'Mech plant in the Inner Sphere.[6]
In 3012, the Hesperus II facility was the only manufacturer to build the awesome Atlas BattleMech in large numbers.[1] In 3018 Defiance sued the Chara III franchise of Mech-it-Lube to prevent them from violating the no-modification clause that came with Chameleon ’Mechs.[7] Defiance expanded into vehicle design in 3020 when they unveiled the Patton and Rommel tanks[8] after 25 years of development. They followed those tanks with a new 'Mech design, the Hatchetman, three years later.[9] In 3025 Defiance began producing the Enforcer and Valkyrie BattleMechs as a way to bolster the FedCom Alliance.[10] While Defiance Industries' Enforcer line became one of the many casualties of the Jihad, the Valkyrie continued production at the facility[2][11]
Defiance Industries benefited greatly from the technological explosion of the 3050s, but following the Lyran secession from the Federated Commonwealth, the fledgling Lyran Alliance relied on Defiance scientists for new technologies. DI was first tasked with reverse engineering class-20 autocannons from Clan salvage, and later developing its signature heavy Gauss rifle and a production model of the light engine.[12]
In 3068, the Word of Blake attacked Hesperus II[13] with WarShips. By 3070, Blakist forces had taken the planet[14] which forced Defiance to rely on its smaller plants on Furillo and Kwangjong-ni as its main production lines.[15] As a result of the damage taken by the various Defiance facilities, Defiance Industries stock plummeted in 3070, with a war bonds campaign launched by Defiance across the entire of the Lyran Alliance only managing to slow the drop.[16] While they controlled the planet, the Blakists converted several Hesperus II production lines to produce their own preferred BattleMech variants. The Blakists were eventually pushed off Hesperus II, but not before they left they destroyed several production facilities and damaged many more.[15]
By the later years of the Jihad, production of the Zeus assault 'Mech stopped on Furillo.[17] The damage to the Hesperus II lines also meant that even by 3079 the Battle Hawk, Sentinel, Cobra, Gunslinger, Fafnir, and Banshee BattleMechs were no longer in production on Hesperus. The company started production on five other BattleMech designs at that time, however.[18] In the immediate aftermath of the Jihad, it was widely anticipated that whatever Defiance was doing at its Kwangjong-ni plant - a secret R&D facility that foreign intelligence agencies found very difficult to penetrate - the results would soon be adding to the rebuilding efforts being undertaken by the LAAF.[19]
With the formation of the Republic of the Sphere and the transfer of much of the Skye Province of the Lyran Alliance to the Republic, Hesperus II was incorporated into the Bolan Province of the Alliance. This was quite a boon for the province, despite the damage the mammoth Defiance Industries plant had taken. By 3085 the Hesperus II plant had at least fifteen different BattleMech production lines running alongside a dozen Combat Vehicle lines and a smaller number of battle armor and DropShip lines. Despite the drop in production compared with that of the mid-3070s, the Hesperus plant was still the most productive defense manufacturing site known to exist; however, the damage suffered during the Jihad was more extensive than had originally been believed. As a result, the company estimated the Hesperus II plant would not return to prior production levels until the 3120s.[20] Defiance Industries offset some of these losses when it absorbed Gray Death Technologies, gaining full control of the company in the wake of the Blakist attack on Glengarry. GDT's battlesuit manufacturing lines were relocated to DI's plant on Furillo.[21]
Defiance also began experimenting with producing Clan-grade equipment in-house during the Jihad. Defiance Industries replicated the Advanced SRM launcher used on Clan battle armor for a new version of the Gray Death Strike battlesuit.[22] The Furillo facility began producing a Clantech extralight fusion engine for their experimental Axman,[23] while Kwangjong-ni produced a prototype Demolisher II variant with Clan-grade Ultra AC/10s.[24] While these designs were ultimately downgraded due to their astronomical cost, they provided DI researchers with valuable insight into the production of new technology.[25]
The Hesperus II facility was damaged once more in the Dark Age by twin invasions from Clan Wolf and Clan Jade Falcon. Though the facility stayed in Lyran hands, production was disrupted in the process of defending the facility. Defiance Industries leadership opted to invest heavily in the Furillo facility, which was projected to match the storied output of Hesperus II by the end of 3150.[26]
During this time, Defiance began putting Clan-spec matériel into general production, resulting in new mixed-technology variants of many designs. Designs ranging from flagship 'Mechs like the Atlas[27] and Zeus[28] to workhorses like the Sentinel[29] and Locust[30] were redesigned using new higher-performance equipment.

Manufacturing[edit]
Defiance Industries has manufacturing centers on the following planets:
Furillo[edit]
Hesperus II[edit]
Kwangjong-ni[edit]
Note: This site is known as Defiance Manufacturing Annex.[99]
Notes[edit]
- Field Report 2765: LCAF refers to Defiance Industries as a mining facility supporting the Whitten Industries BattleMech plant.[106] This seems to conflict with other sources, which say the Lyran Commonwealth targeted Defiance Industries in Operation PROMETHEUS, the raid on Hesperus II that obtained BattleMech technology for the Commonwealth.[107]
- Technical Readout: 3039 mentions, with little detail, that the Orion was originally built on Hesperus II.[108] It is possible that Defiance was the producer, but there is little more information, and other manufacturers have operated on Hesperus II.
