Fighting for the Past is a short story by Geoff “Doc” Swift that was published in the fourteenth issue of Shrapnel.
Plot summary[edit]
The Seeker (Clan Goliath Scorpion) Star Commander Abizel was making a recon at the forest, on the Hanseatic League planet Braunschweig, locating a Star League Era BattleMech Repair Facility. She was uncovered by a team of Hansa soldiers, which land nearby her with a VTOL, and began searching her. Abizel kills three soldiers and the VTOL pilots, and after taking their tracking dog, steals the VTOL to escape.
Two years later, Abizel, now a Star Captain, returns to Braunschweig as part of the Hanseatic Crusade, making a combat drop nearby the BRF, leading her Trinary to capture the facility. A battle ensues, and the Scorpions crush the Hansa defenders. Abizel felt herself impressed by a Hansa MechWarrior which refuses to damage the BRF, and after interrogating him, she learns than he too wanted to protect the ancient facility. After ordering the execution of a technician which had attempted to sabotage the BRF, accepts the first one as her bondsman.
