Armament and Equipment
The Block II Davion may have been an improvement on the Block I, especially in regards to armor and transport capabilities, however, it is not significantly better armed.  For naval engagements, the Block II exclusively features a massive number of naval autocannons. This choice is quite short-sighted, considering the class’s intended role – conducting long, independent missions.  Though powerful, the ammunition-dependence of the Davion II meant that the ship would never quite fulfill its mission adequately.

Whereas a Block I Davion sported a mix of capital weapons, combining NAC/25s and NAC/30s with NL45s and Light Naval PPCs, the Block II Davion was instead designed to incorporate only naval autocannon. The mix of NAC/25s, NAC/30s, and NAC/40s significantly boosted the amount of damage a Block II Davion could inflict with its capital weapons compared to a Block I Davion, but did leave the Block II Davions without weapons that could inflict damage at extreme range. The Block II Davion also incorporated a substantially increased anti-fighter arsenal compared to its predecessor, replacing the earlier ships LRM-20s with a larger number of LRM-15s, adding multiple PPCs to several arcs and boosting the number of lasers substantially.

However, Davion IIs are much more capable of defending themselves against smaller craft, with a fearsome array of energy weapons and long-range missiles. The ability to transport many AeroSpace Fighters also helps the long-term survivability of Block II Davions against smaller adversaries.

Description

The Block II Davion-class destroyer was commissioned by First Prince Alexander Davion, but despite officially being the second block of Davions, the Block IIs bore relatively little resemblance to the original Davion Block I WarShips. The procurement of the original Davions was marred by corruption, administrative incompetence, and delays that resulted in a ship that was late into service and underwhelming in comparison to the original requirement. Alexander made sweeping reforms when he came into power, including dismantling the bureaucratic systems that resulted in the Block I Davion. After he authorized the production of the Block II Davions, the resulting heavy destroyers that began entering service forty years after the cancellation of the Block I ships were 60,000 tons heavier and vastly superior in performance; unlike the earlier ships, the Block II Davions had docking points for two DropShips, a full aerospace fighter wing, a substantially revised arsenal of weaponry and significantly more armor. Changing the armor used from standard armor to Ferro-Carbide armor meant that while a Block II Davion only carried approximately 50 tons more armor in total than its predecessor, the amount of protection offered by that armor was almost double that of the earlier ships.[3]

Because of the improvements to the overall design, the Block II Davion was able to serve the navies of the Federated Suns for more than 200 years.[3][4]

The Davion II served in the Federated Suns navy throughout the Star League era; in 2765, no less than fifteen Davion IIs were in service across the four active fleets, making it the most numerous class in service with the Federated Suns at that point in time. While all of the Davion I class WarShips had been retired from active service, there were rumors at the time that the navy would reactive some mothballed Davion Is as a part of the rapid rearmament program, which would have resulted in both classes of ship potentially operating alongside each other.[4] No Davion IIs survived the Succession Wars.[3]

Armament and Equipment

Whereas a Block I Davion sported a mix of capital weapons, combining NAC/25s and NAC/30s with NL45s and Light Naval PPCs, the Block II Davion was instead designed to incorporate only naval autocannon. The mix of NAC/25s, NAC/30s, and NAC/40s significantly boosted the amount of damage a Block II Davion could inflict with its capital weapons compared to a Block I Davion, but did leave the Block II Davions without weapons that could inflict damage at extreme range. The Block II Davion also incorporated a substantially increased anti-fighter arsenal compared to its predecessor, replacing the earlier ships LRM-20s with a larger number of LRM-15s, adding multiple PPCs to several arcs and boosting the number of lasers substantially.[3]

Cargo

 • Bay 1: Fighters/Small Craft (18), 6 Doors[3]
 • Bay 2: 72,036.5 tons of Cargo, 2 Doors[3]

The Block II Davions maintained the Block I's first-class passenger accommodations and added berths for two platoons of space marines.

Named vessels

(See Category:Individual Davion-class WarShips for a list of named vessels, both Block I and Block II.)

Notes

 • When first fielded, a Davion II would commonly transport a pair of assault DropShips, typically Achilles-class DropShips, but later Vengeance-class DropShips were permanently assigned to Davion IIs.[3]
