Description
Credit for the development of the Lao Hu falls on a young student at the Victoria Academy of Arms and Technology. Not an engineering or technician student, as many would guess, but a MechWarrior taking extra classes in battlefield technology. She noted that the Thunder design, though successful, contained a few flaws easily corrected with the new construction materials now obtainable through Chancellor Liao's Xin Sheng efforts and the military-industrial complex.
+
Designed by a student at the Victoria Academy of Arms and Technology, the Lao Hu ("Tiger") is based on the Thunder BattleMech and is designed to correct perceived flaws in the Thunder by using new technologies available to the Capellan Confederation. The Lao Hu is built on a lightweight Chariot Type II Endo Steel that carries a GM 375 XL engine which gives the 'Mech a top speed of 86.4 km/h while sacrificing some survivability for more free weight and a heavier weapons payload.  The Lao Hu is protected by an impressive thirteen and a half tons of armor, making it capable of weathering hits from all but the heaviest weapons.

Before presenting the design to authority, she worked up schematics and had a friend program the design into a simulator to field test her ideas. When it became apparent to her that the new design was a vast improvement on the Thunder 'Mech, she handed over reams of paper documenting her research to the higher-ups who could make the design a reality. The material proved so thorough and brilliant that the engineers had little work to do other than submit the design for production. the student was given the privilege of naming the new 'Mech, dubbing the Lao Hu which means Tiger in Hanyu (Chinese). The design has lived up to its namesake, proving to be a powerful and aggressive force on the battlefield.

Weapons and Equipment
 +
The Lao Hu is capable of engaging an enemy at most any range. For long-range combat, the Lao Hu has a Martell ER Large Laser and a Zeus LRM-15 launcher, giving the 'Mech a powerful long range punch. For close combat, the Lao Hu has a devastating Shengli LB-X Autocannon/20 which is capable of firing both solid rounds for armor penetration and cluster rounds allowing it to find holes in already damaged armor and for anti-aircraft use.

The Lao Hu entered service in 3062, in time to see some action in the St. Ives conflict, though its role was usually underplayed. However, the strength of the design shows in the numerous petitions since then from assault-class lances and companies requesting the Lao Hu.

For her role in developing the 'Mech, the student (when drafted early from school by the Prefectorate Guard) was awarded the prototype she helped build and was escorted by a full lance of these machines into the Guard. Now into its third production run, outstripping the Shengli Arms' Jinggau in popularity, there are few regiments in the Capellan Confederation that do not boast at least one of these new 'Mechs.

Using the Thunder as a model, the Autocannon/20 was upgraded to the same Mydron Excel LB-X Autocannon/20 found on the Yu Huang assault 'Mech. By employing a Chariot Type II Endo Steel chassis and recovering tonnage from the Thunder's set of Medium Pulse Lasers, the Lao Hu was given a strong long-range weapons profile. With the varied LRM munitions developed recently, these two weapons augmented the 'Mechs already strong tactical position.

The Lao Hu's aggressive nature is enforced by the GM 375 XL engine, which bestows the best movement curve a 75-ton 'Mech can employ. With speeds ranging up to 86 kilometers per hour, the new design could approach rapidly, trading off LRM rack for autocannon at an effective range.

Description[edit]

Weapons and Equipment[edit]

The Lao Hu is capable of engaging an enemy at most any range. For long-range combat, the Lao Hu has a Martell ER Large Laser and a Zeus LRM-15 launcher, giving the 'Mech a powerful long range punch. For close combat, the Lao Hu has a devastating Shengli LB-X Autocannon/20 which is capable of firing both solid rounds for armor penetration and cluster rounds allowing it to find holes in already damaged armor and for anti-aircraft use.

Variants[edit]

  • LHU-3B
Modified to carry a C3 master computer, the 3B downgrades its autocannon to an LB 10-X AC, drops a ton of armor and replaces the LRM-15 with an LRM-10 with an Artemis IV FCS. The 3B uses its C3 computer to link together an entire lance and gives the 'Mechs unparalleled accuracy when connected.[1] BV (1.0) = 1,281 (C3:147),[3] BV (2.0) = 1,497[5]
  • LHU-3C
The 3C is intended to spar with its enemies at long range. The 'Mech replaced the LB 20-X AC with a powerful Gauss rifle. Additionally, the 3C removed the LRM-15 in favor of three LRM-5 launchers, giving it the same firepower but allowing it to spread it over a greater number of targets.[1] BV (1.0) = 1,611,[3] BV (2.0) = 1,878[6]
  • LHU-3L
Introduced in the Jihad, this version of the Lao Hu turns the enemy's equipment against him. It carries a Rotary AC/5 in the right arm, while the left carries a plasma rifle. An advanced Targeting Computer ties into these weapons, making them more accurate. The LRM-10 has been enhanced with an Artemis IV fire control system. BV(2.0)=1,995[7]
