The Betelgeuse system was the location of at least one habitable world, Betelgeuse II, and as of June 3152 was located in the Sian Commonality of the Capellan Confederation.[3]

System Description[edit]

Betelgeuse is located close to the Latice and Sigma Mare systems[4][5] and consisted of a gargantuan class M2I primary orbited by at least two planets.[2]

System History[edit]

The Betelgeuse system was colonized during the Star League era at some point after the end of the Reunification War.[6][7]

Betelgeuse II, more commonly known simply as Betelgeuse, is the second planet in the Betelgeuse system and is an important industrial world.

Planetary History[edit]

Third Succession War[edit]

Betelgeuse was an important Capellan factory world on their border with the Free Worlds League. Coveted by House Marik and especially Dame Catherine Humphreys of Andurien, it was often the target of raids throughout its history but remained firmly in Liao hands. Betelgeuse was home to Warrior House Kamata who vigorously guarded the weapon factories on the planet.[1]

Up until the Fourth Succession War, over twenty different firms on Betelgeuse's northern hemisphere used to produce the greater part of all Capellan luxury goods and consumer goods.[1] However, they were closed down after the war when the Capellans channeled all their resources into military production.[citation needed]

Andurien/Canopus Invasion[edit]

Betelgeuse was Andurien's prime target during its war with the Confederation, and House Kamata formed the most significant part of the Capellan Confederation Armed Forces on the planet. The First Defenders of Andurien, Andurien's premiere formation, attacked the world in the opening stages of the conflict, arriving on Betelgeuse in December 3030. The Andurien forces were reluctant to engage the Warrior House troops, preferring to attack the planet's Home Guard, but in late December, House Kamata attacked the First Defenders' rear, inflicting heavy casualties.[29] The arrival of the mercenary Tooth of Ymir in February of 3031 reinforced the Andurien position, but House Kamata refused to give in. In July, Warrior House Hiritsu landed on Betelgeuse and staged a risky attack on top of the Andurien positions, destroying much of the invaders' supply caches. The Andurien forces abandoned hunting for the Kamata warriors in favor of attacking the scattered Hiritsus.[30] Nevertheless, the fight was a stalemate, and only the arrival of all five regiments of the McCarron's Armored Cavalry in May finally drove the Andurien forces from the planet.[31]

Jihad[edit]

Betelgeuse was an important manufacturer of heavy tanks and BattleMech parts. During the Jihad, the Chancellor sponsored the construction of a new Hellespont Industrials plant on Betelgeuse.[32]

A raiding party consisting of forces from both Andurien and Zion struck at Betelgeuse during the second week of November 3069.[33]

Geography[edit]

Betelgeuse has two continents named Bulwark and Ecchi.[2]

Planetary Locations[edit]

  • Bidan: the planetary capital city, located on Bulwark[2]
  • Kingston: a heavily urban area[2][41]

Industrial Centers[edit]

Notes[edit]

  • In real life, Betelgeuse is one of the biggest stars known, a bloated red supergiant with an estimated diameter of 697 million kilometers (compared to 1.4 million kilometers for our sun, Sol). As such, it is unlikely that it would have two or more planets, and even more unlikely that its second planet could be colonized by humans. Some scientists believe that Betelgeuse will go supernova within the next 1000 years, i.e. before the storyline of Classic BattleTech. The spectral class given for the star in BattleTech sources (M2 I) is correct and corresponds with real-life sources.
  • Betelgeuse is alternatively spelled Betelgeuze, Beteigeuze or Beteigeuse.
