Grand Base IV, or simply Grand Base, is an important industrial world deep within the Capellan Confederation and is known as the homeworld of the Death Commandos. It was orbited by two moons: Hightower and Capetown.[2][36]

Planetary History[edit]

Fourth Succession War[edit]

Grand Base was the personal holding of Colonel Pavel Ridzik. It served as a large military training, staging, and repair facility. Grand Base also boasted the second-largest BattleMech production facility in the Capellan Confederation. Only Tikonov's vast factories are larger.[1]

In 3030, Grand Base became a battlefield. Warrior House Fujita drove the attacking Andurien forces off world.[37] The defeat of the Sixth Defenders of Andurien by the Warrior House, militia regiments, and Death Commando trainees, provided a huge morale boost to the Confederation's armed forces. Heavy investment by the Capellan Confederation through the 3030's insured that the planet's economy had recovered by 3040.[2]

Geography[edit]

Grand Base is a tropical world in temperature. Seventy-six percent of its surface is covered with land. Behemoth, the planet's main continent, dominates the world. Behemoth is covered in rolling hills and mountains. The main continent has a large coastal mountain range along its east edge. There are three other sub-continent landmasses on the world, all of them easily reached by atmospheric transport craft. More importantly the huge freshwater seas that make up the other 34% of the planet's surface are home to many imported Terran fish as well as reptiles.[5]

Notes[edit]

Handbook: House Liao, published only a few months earlier than Objectives: Capellan Confederation, mentions that Grand Base has multiple continents, but does not name any of them. However, Objectives: Capellan Confederation states that there is only one continent named Behemoth. No other sources confirms or contradicts either piece of information at this time.
