Sang-shao Choung Vong was the commander of the Capellan Confederation's Vong's Grenadiers from at least 3057 to 3068.[2][3][4]

History[edit]

Arboris[edit]

During Operation GUERRERO, Vong with what was then known as Ishara Grenadiers was tasked with capturing the Chaos March world of Arboris in 3057, from an understrength Arboris SMM. Initially forcing the Militia to retreat into the Hardina Mountains, Vong turned to harassing the civilian population, hoping to incite a rebellion which he could make an example of. This was however more successful than Vong hoped, with local agricultural associations forming the Farmers Freedom Army, which launched large scale attacks on the Grenadiers.

After refitting, the Militia sought to link up with the FFA near the town of Bantor, where they assisted the FFA to push Vong's First Battalion back to the capital city of Kansas Plain. The FFA however then turned on the Militia, due to their desire to make Arboris independent from both the Federated Commonwealth and Capellan Confederation, resulting in the world becoming a three way stalemate between Vong, the Militia and the FFA. Apart from harassing local civilians, Vong was unable to make much headway in breaking this stalemate.[2] Shortly prior to March 3058 however, Vong and his Ishara Grenadiers were able to drive the mercenary Avanti's Angels off the Arboris, who had been assisting the FFA. This was however only because the FFA sold the Angels out to Vong, possibly to recoup the costs of hiring the mercenaries.[5]

Carver V[edit]

As the Capellan Confederation sought to further establish it control of the Chaos March, the renamed Vong’s Grenadiers were sent to capture Carver V, but Vong's efforts in this regard were not unsuccessful. The Grenadiers were ambushed by aerospace fighters during their landing on the world, suffering heavy losses, before being again ambushed by BattleMechs after grounding when trying to push into the world's capital city.[6] Despite holding a tenuous foothold on the world for a further two months, Vong was eventually ordered by his superiors to fall back to Aldebaran for rest and refit.[1]

Despite this, there were reports that after the failure to capture Carver V, Vong had become a pirate. His bandits were supposedly attacked by a Lyran Alliance Colonel named David Renard, who ordered mercenaries in his employ to intercept and destroy Vong's bandit convoy as it was trying to cross the Little Yangtze River from Steiner into Liao territory. Renard subsequently ordered the mercenaries to cross the river in pursuit of the bandits. Colonel Renard, displaying signs of paranoia, was reported to have subsequently ordered his mercenaries to destroy Vong's bandit stronghold on Little Bear Island in the Ivan Sector, while most of their forces were drawn away by a full-scale Lyran assault. During the mercenary attack, the mercenaries intercepted a transmission in which Choung Vong called for support from House Liao, but was rebuffed. Vong and his forces were then shattered by the mercenaries.[6]

Rebuilding[edit]

During the Grenadiers time rebuilding on Aldebaran, Sang-shao Vong received unconfirmed reports that the Word of Blake was responsible for supporting independence movements in the Chaos March such as Vong had suffered from, the enraged Vong promptly shot the the Blakist Acolyte who delivered the seal and confidential report. Forced to make reparations to the Word from the Grenadiers, the tensions were made worse when Vong's troops "accidentally" targeted a WoB installation during their next mission on Genoa, during a battle with the local Militia. This drew unwanted attention from the Maskirovka, who assigned a new liaison officer to improve the attitude of the Grenadiers and the command staff, which together with an official reprimand did nothing for the units morale.[1]

Kaifeng[edit]

As of 3067, Vong's Grenadiers were stationed on the Liao Commonality world of Kaifeng, with Vong still in place as CO.[7] Vong and his unit were however still disaffected, remaining understrength and sabotaging their own rebuilding every time the Strategios attempted to improve their position. This included being heavy-handed when dealing with civilians, despite the guidance of their Maskirovka liaison, and inciting three further incidents with the Word during the period 3065 to 3067. This include shots being fired between a Word security force and a member of Vong’s Special Teams infantry.[8]

At this time, Vong and his Grenadiers were also reported to have been garrisoning Elgin as a mercenary unit, however this appears to have been in error.[See Notes]

Hexare[edit]

In 3068, during Operation THUNDERSTRIKE, Sang-shao Choung Vong was reported to have led the reclamation of Hexare from the Federated Suns. Commanding a task force including Renshield's Dragoons and House Imarra, Vong shattered the Fourth Illician Lancers, forcing them to retreat off-world.[3][4]

  • Choung Vong name in some sources is spelled as Choug Vong.[3][7]
