Two different and apparently mutually exclusive descriptions for Thuban exist:
- According to the novel Operation Excalibur, Thuban (Alpha Draconis) is a binary star system of two blue-white A0-class stars circling each other at a distance of thirty-two million kilometers with a period of fifty-one standard days.[1] The radiation was described as "demonic" and uncomfortably high even out at the jump point. The inhabited "planet" in the Thuban system is a hollow, "inside-out" world built into a moon-sized asteroid by Star League engineers. Its spin had been hastened to the point where centrifugal forces provided gravity on the inside. The enclosed environment is entered through airlocks, and light is piped in as needed.[1]
- Conversely, the short story Damage Control describes Thuban as a vast open-environment world with a breathable atmosphere and wide, lava-encrusted plains around Scorpius Mons, the planet's largest highest volcano.[2]
