Planetary History

Settled at some point prior to the end of the Age of War[2] Marantha was a member of the Magistracy of Canopus when a Star League Defense Force task force under the command of Captain-General Marion Marik was assigned to conquer the Magistracy of Canopus in 2577. Marantha was targetted by the SLDF following the capture of Canopus IV, with the VII Corps' 56th Brigade landing in late 2584 with support from the 4th Marik Militia and the 3rd Regulan Hussars. The SLDF invasion was fiercely contested by the 1st Canopian Light Horse and Mieselsen's Maruaders despite being outnumbered more than two to one, and the resulting battle saw the Marauders effectively destroyed as a combat unit although the Light Horse managed to escape off-world.[4][28]

Marantha would be occupied by the SLDF for the remainder of the war; once the Reunification War ended, a number of Magistracy worlds were annexed by the Free Worlds League, but Marantha remained a part of the Magistracy.[4][5] During the Star League era Marantha was home to the Magistracy Aerospace Academy (MAA); Marantha had been chosen to host the MAA for a number of reasons, including the civilian spacecraft industry in the system, which was already substantial, and the combination of the large asteroid belt - considered ideal for certain kinds of training - and presence of a significantly-sized population of Belters living there.[29]

Marantha appeared beautiful to the original settlers, but they quickly discovered that the soil lacked certain critical trace elements required by Terran crops. The answer was a series of tailored crops, but in the 2980s a series of famines reduced the planet's agricultural industry to a subsistence level. Despite these problems, Maranthan brandy was still being exported in 3079.[30]

The world has three continents, Jubilee, Cheatham, and Glory Be.[31]
