It retains the weapon loadout and the six [[jump jets]] of the original design. The additional ton of armour combined with the 4.5 tons of additional reactor mass mean that the 'Mech is overweight (at 25.5 tons). This could be remedied by reducing the SRM ammunition by half a ton but that is neither noted in the stats (where a full ton of SRM ammo is allocated) nor legal under standard construction rules.

Description

The Wasp began production in 2471 as a recon 'Mech. Today, the Wasp is still considered a valued asset for recon. work. The design has a ground speed that is considered lackluster when compared to most modern light 'Mechs but the slow ground speed is offset by the Wasps capability to jump up to 180 meters. While carrying heavier weapons than 'Mechs like the Locust, the Wasp will generally only engage other light 'Mechs, using its jumping capabilities to avoid conflicts with larger foes when it can. The Wasp is also known to be used in the role of a raider because of its abilities to hit and fade in rough terrain.

Armament

The Wasp carries a light weapons payload meant primarily for self-defence against other light 'Mechs and is not meant to be used to engage heavier 'Mechs. The primary weapon is a Diverse Optics Type 2 Medium Laser. This is backed up by a Bical SRM-2 launcher which can use standard and Inferno rounds, making it useful against either enemy 'Mechs and a good deterrent against infantry and vehicles.

Variants

  • WSP-1D - This variant exchanges the SRM-2 launcher for a Small Laser and a Flamer while retaining the Medium Laser. BV (1.0) = 327, BV (2.0) = 403
  • WSP-1K - The 1K Wasp carries a Medium Laser and a Machine Gun. The saved weight is used to upgrade the armor by a half ton. BV (1.0) = 330, BV (2.0) = 376
  • WSP-1L - The 1L variant of the Wasp replaces the Medium Laser and SRM-2 launcher with a single SRM-4 launcher. BV (1.0) = 290, BV (2.0) = 335
  • WSP-1W - The 1W Wasp replaces all of the weapons with six Small Lasers. BV (1.0) = 316, BV (2.0) = 373
  • WSP-2A - Called the Super Wasp, this evolution of the classic Wasp was being developed by a House Davion science team at the Friden AeroSpace Park on Hoff from December 3020 onwards, and a prototype saw combat action defending the compound against the Black Widow Company on 13 May 3022. No sightings were reported afterwards. The Super Wasp as described in the (canonical) sourcebook, Tales of the Black Widow Company, has a mass of 25 tons, 4 tons of standard armour and a Nissan 200 fusion engine that increases the base speed to 129.6 km/h. It retains the weapon loadout and the six jump jets of the original design. The additional ton of armour combined with the 4.5 tons of additional weight for the larger engine mean that the 'Mech would be overweight by one ton. This could be remedied by assuming the described "reinforcement" of the 20-ton Wasp's internal structure to be an early equivalent to Endo Steel (which would be exactly 1 ton lighter than a standard 25 ton chassis).
WSP-3L Wasp
  • WSP-3M - The 3M Wasp upgrades the chassis to Endo Steel and the armor to Ferro-Fibrous. This variant carries a Medium Pulse Laser and a single SRM-2 launcher. BV (1.0) = 346, BV (2.0) = 397
  • WSP-3S - The 3S variant of the Wasp upgrades the structure to an Endo Steel version, upgrades the heat sinks to double heat sinks, and carries two ER Medium Lasers, a Guardian ECM suite, and a TAG target designator. BV (1.0) = 584, BV (2.0) = 595
  • WSP-3W - The 3W upgrades the armor to Ferro-Fibrous and carries two Small Pulse Lasers and four Small Lasers. BV (1.0) = 276, BV (2.0) = 346
  • WSP-7MAF - This variant uses an XL Engine on an Endo Steel frame to propel the Wasp up to 129 km/h. It also mounts enough jump jets to match, with a maximum range of 240 meters per jump. It must use this speed to good effect, as it is only protected by three tons of armor. The right arm laser is upgraded to an ER Medium Laser and the design uses ten double heat sinks to dissipate waste heat. Finally, an MML 5 with two tons of ammunition give it a decent punch at all ranges. In order to make room for these upgrades, a small cockpit and XL Gyro are also used. BV (2.0) = ???
