Description

Designed at the same facility that birthed Burke Kale's Direct Neural Interface project, the Wildfire was designed from the ground up to use a Torso Cockpit. Based on the 3050 era Crusader, the Wildfire was intended to show the new cockpit technology in use. As a result, it became the first documented headless BattleMech. Equipped with a suite of close range weapons, the Wildfire was intended to be a close combat fighter. The lack of any significant long-range firepower made the Wildfire rely on its heavy armor to bring it into effective range.

Only two Wildfire 'Mechs were ever produced on Hyde. Their ultimate fate is unknown.

Of the two known manufactured Wildfire mechs were ultimately lost, one has surfaced. The one Wildfire mech was seen, photoholoed and spy information sent to House Kurita on the reemergence of this close combat fighter. The data was intercepted by Maeve Wolf, herself, and the spy was killed while attempting to transmit the stolen information to House Kurita. The data that ultimately reached House Kurita was nothing more than a photoholo of the Wildfire, all data sent through ComStar was corrupted and unreadable by the Kuritan spy network. All they received was the photoholo and a message from someone unknown to the Kuritan spy network. The message was as follows: "Best regards. Maeve."[citation needed]

The photoholo confirmed that the Wildfire mech did indeed survive over the years, and from photoholo, it seems that more were being produced. As Kuritan spies scrambled to decipher and understand the nature of the message and photoholo, they have concluded that the Wildfire was back in production in limited numbers on Outreach. Further attempts to infiltrate Outreach for further information surrounding this enigma have failed. Wolf's Dragoons' diplomatic emissaries have all laughed off the idea of a headless mech, stating that Wolf's Dragoons had too many things to do other than perpetuate a myth. Kuritan spies have conceded that limited production of the Wildfire mech may have resumed on Outreach, as to understanding why the production of an old design has resurfaced, Kuritan spies are at a loss for an explanation.[citation needed]

Armament

The Wildfire traded the Crusader's long range firepower for speed and armor protection. Intended to pursue fast moving opponents, the Wildfire used a suite of pulse lasers as it's primary armament. (The pulse lasers increased hit probability offset the inefficiency of the Torso Mounted Cockpit.) When in close combat with an enemy, the pair of Streak SRM-2 launchers provided additional firepower without being wasteful. The Machine Gun was very useful for defending against enemy infantry units.

Defensively, the Wildfire mounted CASE in the right torso to protect the 'Mech from ammunition explosions. The pilotless head of the Wildfire contained an Anti-Missile System that would destroy incoming fire while the Wildfire closed with it's target.

Variants

As the Wildfire was a prototype, it had no variants.

  1. Unbound, p. 73: The Wildfire description says it uses Endo Steel internal structure. The Wildfire record sheet doesn't show any slots taken up by Endo Steel, even though the fluff table shows the 'Mech's skeleton weighs 3.25 tons.
  2. Unbound, p. 73: The Wildfire description says it uses Ferro-Fibrous Armor but the record sheet doesn't show any critical slots taken up by FF Armor.
  3. Unbound, p. 73: The Wildfire description says it uses an XL engine. The Wildfire record sheet doesn't show this, and the fluff table shows the Magna Engine takes up 23 tons.
