Plot summary[edit]
Tikonov stands under attack. The story cuts back and forth between Duke Aaron Sandoval II planning, preparing, and joining the defense against Capellan Confederation forces and, later in the day, 3rd Federated Suns Lancers Colonel Wallace Glynn sorting out the results. After losing contact with the capital, Tikograd, and thus with Sandoval, Glynn heads towards the city, eventually finding Sandoval dead among the many killed in battle, his head largely gone. The Capellans lost the day's battle, but they killed the Duke.
