Du Shi Wang-class battleship of the Capellan Navy

History

The impressive Capellan fleets are what gave Franco Liao the power to build the Capellan Confederation, and successive Chancellors have done what they could to keep that tradition alive.[1] By 2765, the year before the Amaris Civil War, there were 37 warships in the Capellan Navy, which were 5 Du Shi Wang battleships (vintage Black Lion battlecruisrs), 16 heavy cruisers (10 Soyal and 6 Aegis), 9 destroyers (3 Baron, 2 Carson, 2 Lola I, and 2 Essex I), and 6 corvettes (3 Vincent & 3 Vigilant).[2]

The fleet was divided into 6 squadrons, with each commonality getting a squadron. Each of those squadrons consisted of one battleship, two cruisers, and 2-3 smaller warships. A reserve squadron existed with the Typhon battlecruiser, 6 more cruisers, and 3 smaller warships. In the event of a major military action, the reserve squadron was deployed to reinforce the commonality fleet. House Liao was aware of the navy's vulnerability at that time, therefore they attempted to acquire as many warship hulls as they could and increased purchases of fighter carriers and assault Dropships.[3]

Feng Huang-class Heavy Cruiser of the Capellan Navy.

With the collapse of the Star League in 2780, and the wars that raged in the centuries afterwards, the Capellan Navy went into decline. As the Confederation lost much technological infrastructure and experienced territorial losses, it resulted in an ever decreasing budget for the Capellan Navy. Its fortunes changed with the renaissance of the 3050s-60s, starting with the reintroduction of WarShips to its arsenal.[4] Two new classes of WarShips introduced to the Capellan Navy were the Feng Huang cruisers and Impavido destroyers, with the first ships of each class being produced in 3058.[5]

Like the fleets of the other Inner Sphere powers, the Capellan Navy suffered horrendous losses during the Jihad and lost most of its WarShips. As of 3145, the Capellan Navy possessed two heavy cruisers (the two surviving ships of the 6-ship Feng Huang class), each with a fleet of assault DropsShips. Not wanting to risk their cruisers, the navy's primary force consists of flotillas consisting of Pocket Warships of the Lung Wang and Vengeance-DC classes.[6]
