The title of Duke (or Duchess) of New Avalon is granted to the noble ruler of the world New Avalon. The Duke of New Avalon is usually also the First Prince of the Federated Suns.

During the Star League era, the duchy was considered a courtesy title bestowed on the heir to the title of First Lord. It gradually gained more powers over the two centuries the title was held by House Cameron. In 2653, the Duke of New Avalon was given the ability to bestow courtesy titles (though not landed ones) to Federation citizens, allowing the First Lord to honor Davion citizens who aided the Star League. In 2698, the Duke of New Avalon gained titular ownership of 30 planets within the Federated Suns. These planets were underdeveloped or totally uninhabited, with the Camerons developing these worlds and transferring them to other rulers as they became self-sufficient, then adopting other worlds. Following the fall of the Star League, the title was claimed by the First Prince, further centralizing the Federated Suns into one person. [1]
