The Succession Wars was a series of near constant conflicts that engulfed the Inner Sphere after the fall of the Star League. Following Kerensky's departure, the five remaining great houses almost immediately embarked upon the greatest war in human history. Snatching up the rulerless planets that were formerly of the Terran Hegemony, and fighting each other for supremacy, the Inner Sphere devolved into the First Succession War. The fires of this war wreaked havoc on human civilization, and lowered the technology level of the Inner Sphere drastically, as well as resulting in billions of dead. Eventually, the First Succession War ended in an exhausted stalemate after 35 years of war, only to resume with the Second Succession War less than a decade later. The Second War lasted another 34 years, further destroying the now-irreplaceable base of Star League technology, and resumed in the Third Succession War a mere two years later. The Third War lasted for over 150 more years, on and off, and by the end in 3025, any remaining vestiges of the Star League in the Inner Sphere were dust on the winds of history. The final and Fourth Succession War was quick and brutal, launched in 3028 by the newly formed Federated Commonwealth in order to destroy the Capellan Confederation and create a territorial passageway through the Terran Corridor between the Davion and Steiner halves of the realm. Although ultimately unsuccesful in their attempt to destroy the Capellans, the Federated Commonwealth and the Fourth Succession War, which ended in 3030, changed the map of the Inner Sphere more in two years then the prior two hundred years of warfare.

The Succession Wars were a series of near constant conflicts that engulfed the Inner Sphere for three hundred years following the fall of the Star League.

Background

Succession Wars, differing greatly in methods and mindset, have the following common characteristics

 • They are conflicts between all five of the Successor States,
 • They are fought over the reestablishment of the Star League under the supremacy of the victor.

Official

First Succession War

Lasting from 2786 to 2821, the First Succession War remains the bloodiest conflict in human history.

Following the departure of the remaining Star League Defense Forces, the five remaining Great Houses almost immediatly started fighting each other over the position of First Lord.

After Coordinator Minoru Kurita's initial declaration of First Lordship, the First Succession Wars saw the destruction of countless world with atomic, biological, and chemical weapons, resulting in billions of lives and decades of technology lost. When the war petered out after 35 years, it was simply due to exhaustion, not from any desire of peace.

Second Succession War

Lasting from [[2830] to 2864, the Second Succession War saw the technological decline back to the levels of 21st century Terra in much of the Inner Sphere.

Following the brief lull required to rebuild the battered forces of the Successor States, the Second Succesion War was no less bloody than the first. While the Successor Stated began the war with the last of their remains warhips, by the end of it, Jumpship theory and HPG Generators had become quasi-magical, and advanced military technology had become irreplacable.

Third Succession War

Lasting from 2866 to 3025, the Third Succession War was a prolonged low-level conflict characterised by a steady loss of technology and the rise of neo-feudalistic traditions in all of the Successor States.

Started due to Operation Holy Shroud, the Third Succession War was fought with technology that was considered mystical. Technological regression had allowed the survival of scant hightech factories, and the developing noble Mechwarrior families were forced to repair their machines with the gutted remains of their enemies'.

Fourth Succession War

Lasting from 3028 to 3030 the Fourth Succession War was a short and brutal war between two emerging power blocks.

Declared during the marriage of Hanse Davion and Melissa Steiner, the Fourth Succession War was a conflict started by the newly formed Federated Commonwealth against the ComStar sponsored Concord of Kapteyn.

One of the few conclicts that had a clear winner, the Fourth Succession War saw the Capellan Confederation halved in territory and power and the emergence of the new Federated Commonwealth, the most powerful nation since the original Star League.

Unofficial

The War of 3039

Lasting from 3039 to 3040, the War of 3039 was a conflict waged between the Federated Commonwealth and the Draconis Combine.

Although the conflict could have developed into a full-fledged Succession War leaving the Federated Commonwealth the strongest power in the Inner Sphere, the war ended in an early stalemate.

The Clan Invasion

Lasting from 3049 to 3052, the Clan Invasion was a prolonged invasion by The Clans, the returning exiles of the SLDF, which were racing towards Terra to reestablish the Star League as a large-scale Grand Council.

Initially thought of as Periphery pirated, the Clans cut a swath corewards through the Inner Sphere, nearly obliterating the newly-formed Free Rasalhague Republic and severely damaging the Draconis Combine and the Federated Commonwealth. Only the intervention of Wolf's Dragoons and a previously unheard of cooperation allowed the Inner Sphere to combat the Clans.

The Clan Invasion was ended with the Battle of Tukayyid, a ritualised conflict between ComStar's army and the Clan warriors. Originally meant to determine a period of cease fire, the Great Refusal and FedCom Civil War enshrined the battle as the end of the Clan Invasion.

The Jihad

Lasting from 3067 to 3081, the Jihad was waged by the Word of Blake against the entire Inner Sphere after the fall of the Second Star League.

Characterised by fall-backs to the weapons of the First Succession War, the Jihad was both and open war against the Word of Blake Protectorate as well as a war in the shadows against ROM agents, which aimed to destabilise both Great Houses and Nations of the Periphery in favor of a Word of Blake-led reestablished Terran Hegemony.

Beginning with a surprise attack against the newly-redivided Federated Suns and Lyran Alliance, the Jihad ended with the invasion of Terra by a coalition force led by Devlin Stone.
