A STRUGGLE TO SURVIVE…

Former hauptmann Ronan Carlyle is a man without a nation. After his former commanding officer declared herself governor-general of a reborn Tamar Pact, Ronan, a loyal Steiner officer, led a group of soldiers and techs including his sister, Isobel, back for Garrison for reassignment.

But on Garrison, his troubles multiply. The senior Lyran officer brands the 26th Arcturan loyalists traitors and cashiers them, stranding nearly 200 former LCAF soldiers, technicians, and crewmen on a Lyran world with no way off-planet.

Forced to scrounge up a way to survive, Ronan and Isobel hatch a plan to get the former LCAF members back to their homeworlds by salvaging ’Mechs. But when a Lyran scout battalion goes AWOL over an off-world mission squashed by their commanding officer, the LCAF is shocked to discover the Arcturan loyalists have built up have the largest contingent of combat equipment outside the militia. Ronan’s people need cash. They have skills. And there’s history in his name…

Thus, the Gray Death Legion is reborn. First as a way to get funds for his people to leave. But they fight the Lyran unit—winning by use of unorthodox tactics—and discover they don’t want to disband… instead, the reconstituted mercenary unit wants to find its next employer…

Plot Summary

On August 3151, in the planet Arcturus, the brothers Ronan and Isobel Carlyle receive the notification than their unit, the 26th Arcturan Guards, which had just retaken their planet Arcturus, was defecting from the LCAF, and reforming the Tamar Pact. Both were stunned, and when their superiors order them to choose loyalties, Both brothers decided to stay loyal to the Lyran Commonwealth, and were forced to leave the planet, along with only some other loyalists. On the planet Garrison, the officer Jennifer Kiping, received the 26th loyalists and overseed their arrest, as they were all considered defectors, and their history of their unit's defection wasn't believed. Days later, Garrison's LCAF's commanding officer, General Bondayehr, decided to throw the 26th Loyalists, despite Kipping's opposition. When she informed Ronan, an old comrade of her, he was devastated. Ten days later, Ronan, his sister and most of the cashiered loyalists were working on a salvage yard. As they lacked the funds to return to their home, all have banded together in exploiting the place, a propiety of the Carlyle's, to obtain the funds. But when they found an Gargoyle's OmniMech, and Ronan decided it may fund all their tickets home, his sister said him than their people didn't want to leave, but to form a mercenary unit together. When a recon battalion of the local Lyran garrison defects to free formed Clan Jade Falcon worlds on their own, Kipping contacted Ronan and contracted his unit to stop them. After deciding to rename the new unit as the Gray Death Legion, the Carlyle's old exctinct but very prestigious unit, both brothers accepted the contract and mobilized the unit. They intercepted the defectors, and both units clashed. Despite being much smaller than the defectors, the Legion managed to contain their advance and sabotage theyr key vehicles, without suffering losses and barely causing them. With their mission now impossible to accomplish, the defectors surrended. Days later, Ronan meet general Bondeyehr, which tried to deny them their payment and salvage, but Ronan show him his proofs of their contract and leaved. Not much after, both Carlyles meet with one of their former officers, now a leader of the reborn Tamar Pact, which poiints them where they can find more recruits, and offers them a contract with the Pact, an offer which they seriously study.
