Christian Campbell was a career officer in the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces renowned for his hedonism.

History[edit]

Early Career[edit]

Campbell rose to fame when he attained the rank of colonel and command of the Fourteenth Lyran Guards at just twenty-six. Early in his career, he was a very gifted athlete and MechWarrior, but he used his position and fame to indulge his interests in food, women and wine, which took a heavy physical toll on him as he got older.[1] During his tenure with the unit, Campbell espoused hawkish views towards the Free Worlds League, views which his successors maintained up through the FedCom Civil War.[2] By 3050, he had been replaced by Marshal Emily Stevens[3] as commander of the Fourteenth and had no direct role in the AFFC's chain of command for combat units.[4]

Alliance Jaegers[edit]

Campbell's fortunes turned around with the creation of the Lyran Alliance in 3057. Katherine Steiner-Davion's new brigade to bolster national pride, the Alliance Jaegers, required a commander, and Campbell was her first choice. Though his physical gifts were long gone, Campbell remained an adept officer and accepted the posting. Rumors swirled around the Hauptmann-General, saying it was not the challenge of shaping a new brigade or the possibility of advancement that excited him, but rather the opportunity to be stationed on Tharkad and attend better parties.[1]

Civil War[edit]

Campbell never became a confidant of Archon Katherine, but he did manage to build some ties to the Royal Court. He exploited these connections during the Civil War to indulge himself, leaving him roundly condemned by all sides of the conflict when it came to a close. He faced numerous accusations of corruption and negligence, only holding his position due to the immediate demand of stability in the wake of the conflict. Peter Steiner-Davion and his advisors planned to replace Campbell when circumstances permitted.[5]

Jihad[edit]

The arrival of the Jihad was a disaster for most, but it likely extended Campbell's career by a decade. The plans to replace him were put on hold by the Word of Blake's attack on Tharkad and the resulting chaos. With the Jaegers brigade reduced to a single unit in the fighting, Campbell replaced Colonel Steve Pitcher as commander of the Skye Jaegers. Though effectively a demotion for Campbell, it did provide him a place in the LAAF. Campbell commanded the unit for much of the Jihad, including Operation SCOUR.[6] By 3085, Pitcher was once again commander of the Skye Jaegers, who were now integrated into a new brigade, the Lyran Reserves.[7]

Campbell was passed over for command of this brigade in favor of Hauptmann-General Daniel Bishop.[7] Given his long-time status as a pariah[6][8] and his lack of a new command,[9] it is likely the elimination of the Jaegers brigade was the end of his career.
