The 1st Kittery Borderers emerged as an elite garrison during the Succession Wars. Originally a bolstered garrison, the Borderers have participated in raiding the Capellan Confederation for quite some time. The traditional enemies of the Borderers were the St. Ives Armored Cavalry; despite the friendship between the St. Ives Compact and the Federated Suns, it took 30 years before the Borderers had let go of traditional hatreds. No longer an elite unit, the Borderers were the personal vanguard of Kuan-Yin Allard Liao during her mercy missions to the Compact.[citation needed]

Formation
Like the First Aragon Borderers, the unit was created by the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns as response to heavy raiding from Capellan Confederation along the border between their territories. When the unit was first formed, it was pattered after the unit on Aragon.

As a combined-arms regiment, with its third battalion consisting of mix Infantry and Armored units.[2] The unit formation was to provide military formations strong enough to withstand heavy raiding from the House Liao.
In 3024, the unit had proven itselves against various Capellan Warrior House units attacking Kittery.[citation needed]
The Borderers was responsible to handling 'Mechs to the newly formed 1st Kittery Training Battalion in 3026. The unit at the time did not have good impression on non-academy graduates receiving MechWarrior training.[3]

Notable Personnel
- Leftenant Steve D. Olin
- Active during the Fourth Succession War, Lt. Olin piloted a Clint that he had captured from the St. Ives Armored Cavalry. After defeating it in battle, he traded its pilot back to the Capellans for a spare gyro for it. Though he held many nontraditional personal views on the military and the Federated Suns, he nevertheless was a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. He commanded one of the best scout lances in the Borderers, specializing in large area recons and hit and run tactics.[11]
Tactics
The unit is unmatched on their homeworld, because they have detailed knowledge of the planet`s geography and topography . When the command meets the enemy on other planets, their combat skills and tactics are generally successful.[9]
