History

Early History

The First Avalon Hussars were formed in 2317 alongside the Federated Suns. By 2750 the First Avalon Hussars had the honor of being the longest continually serving unit in the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns. They spent most of their deployment in the Draconis March fighting the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery. In the War of Davion Succession the First fought on Marduk, commanded by First Prince Joseph Davion. They were unable to prevent the Prince's death, but their skills and tenacity allowed them to cover all friendly units as the AFFS withdrew from the world. They then fought for four years, slowly being ground down by the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery. In 2729 the First Avalon Hussars faced the 4th Sword of Light on Fallon II. After withdrawing from the conflict and rebuilding, they were the first unit to land on Marduk to avenge their Prince's death. After the Star League Defense Force intervened and forced the DCMS back to its borders, the First was assigned to garrison Marduk.

The First's failure to protect Prince Joseph stayed with the regiment, looming over them like a shadow, despite the First continuing to be considered as prestigious a unit as the First Davion Guards. As the Avalon Hussars underwent a rapid expansion following the Star League Council repealing the Council Edict of 2650 the First continued to receive only the best soldiers and equipment; more importantly, by 2765 the First had spent forty years undergoing an exacting training program that caused a high personnel turnover, but which also ensured that the regiment was far more capable than the one that had been unable to protect the First Prince.

Second Succession War

On the 19th of February 2830 Coordinator Jinjiro Kurita launched simultaneous offensives against the Federated Suns and Lyran Commonwealth. Operation AKAI KAZE - RED WIND - was the offensive launched against the Federated Suns; while the main targets of AKAI KAZE were the Franklin, Lucerne and Sakhara V systems, ten assorted systems were also hit by heavy raids, intended to distract and disorient the AFFS. One of those worlds was Breed, on which the First Avalon Hussars were located. The Eighteenth Benjamin Regulars landed on Breed, only to find their attack being swiftly repulsed by the Hussars, with the Hussars storming into the Regulars' landing zones and crushing them, forcing the DCMS troops to retreat rapidly to their Dropships.

Third Succession War

Although the First Avalon Hussars survived the Second Succession War, only eight regiments of the Hussars were still active in 3025, all as Regimental Combat Teams, and the First was not among them, indicating that the First was destroyed or disbanded at some point during the Third Succession War.

The Jihad

The First Avalon Hussars were reactivated during the Jihad as an Light Combat Team drawing elements of the 17th Avalon Hussars. In 3079 they were stationed on Lee as that world's garrison. The Avalon Hussars commander, Marshal Roger William Waters, pushed the unit through its training process and quickly brought the unit back to the level of experience it once boasted.

Between 3081 and 3085 the First Avalon Hussars LCT participated in more than a dozen combat operations. This verified both their combat readiness and the Light Combat Team concept.

Dark Age

The First Avalon Hussars were stationed on New Avalon in 3145. They assumed this position when Harrison Davion rewarded the 1st Davion Guards with a posting to Markesan in 3110. Despite acting as the Prince's guard on New Avalon, they didn't travel with him to other systems. Their thirty-five year post as a bodyguard unit required them to undergo a series of training programs to regain their edge in combat when the Draconis Combine breached the Draconis March.

When the Combine launched its assault upon New Avalon on 8 July 3146, the First Avalon Hussars were among the AFFS defenders who fought ferociously to repel the invaders. While New Avalon ultimately fell to the Dragon, the Hussars escaped to Remagen with the other survivors, and by late March 3147 were ready to participate in Operation PERCEVAL. During PERCEVAL's first raid on Franklin the Hussars resupplied that planet's resistance cells before departing. A subsequent attack on Clovis proved more costly when Combine fighters destroyed one of the Hussars' DropShips during the landings and the Forty-fifth Benjamin Regulars hit the remaining Hussars hard before withdrawing. When the Second Legion of Vega arrived in-system soon after, the Hussars Second Battalion volunteered to remain behind and fight with Clovis' reinvigorated resistance movement.

A year later, the First Avalon Hussars were among the AFFS caught refitting on Remagen in mid-July 3148 when Task Force Tsujigiri arrived in a bid to end PERCEVAL. While the First Kestrel Grenadiers threw themselves at the DCMS raiders, the Hussars used the time gained to better prepare themselves. As the Hikage approached PERCEVAL's central base, the Hussars emerged and forced them back.

On 12 April 3149 the First Avalon Hussars assaulted Coloma alongside the First Davion Guards in an effort to drive the Fifth Sword of Light off the planet. The Hussars were mauled upon landing by the Fifth's aerospace and armor elements, and when the Combine troops quit the planet the wounded Hussars remained behind as a garrison force while the Davion Guards moved on to Saginaw. They were still there on 11 November when the Twenty-second New Samarkand Regulars and Wolf Dragoons' Alpha Regiment arrived. Not yet recovered from their battle in April, the Hussars proved unable to make any headway againse the invasion force, and by the second week the Dragoons had captured the First's command post. The Dragoons commander accepted their surrender and allowed the Hussars to retreat.

After three years of waging a guerrilla war upon the Forty-fifth Benjamin Regulars, the Hussars' Second Battalion found relief in February 3150 when the Fifth Davion Irregulars arrived on Clovis. Together the two Davion units drove the Combine garrion off the planet.

Rules

Reunification War

• During Reunification War scenarios, the Avalon Hussars may employ the following tactics. When attacking, they can either reduce the number of enemy hidden units by 50% or may deploy 50% of their forces in the first half of the map representing the Hussars starting (home) edge. When the defender, they can either put 25% of their units as hidden units anywhere on their half of the board, or they may deploy twice the normal number of conventional minefields AND if using artillery they can predesignate twice as many hexes as normal. The controlling player must choose which ability will be used BEFORE choosing any combat units.

First Succession War

• Between 2786 and 2807, the composition of randomly-generated lances from the First Avalon Hussars are determined using a single roll on the Random Unit Assignment Tables per lance, with all of the lance 'Mechs being the resulting type. Between 2808 and 2819, the lance composition is determined using two rolls on the Random Unit Assignment Tables per lance, and from 2820 lance composition is determined using one roll per 'Mech per lance.

• When generating First Avalon Hussars forces using Random Unit Assignment Tables during the First Succession War, First Avalon Hussars receive a +4 modifier to each roll on the appropriate table.
