System Information

The Veil system was home to at least one habitable world and as of 3145 was located in the bandit kingdom known as the Rim Territories.[1][2]

System Description

The Veil system is located near the Austerlitz and Edirne systems.[3][4][1][2]

System History

Originally named Oporto, the Veil system was either colonized during the Star League era at some point after the end of the Reunification War, or was an already-inhabited system that was incorporated into the Rim Worlds Republic during this period and which was considered significant enough to have its location recorded by Inner Sphere nations.[5][3][4]

Oporto was annexed by the Lyran Commonwealth during Operation ALMARIC,[6][7] before becoming an independent system at some point during the Second Succession War.[8][9][10] Oporto subsequently vanished from maps during the Third Succession War, having either been abandoned, depopulated or rendered too insignificant to merit further recording.[11][12]

Veil is described as a marginally habitable world that requires L-3 life support and anti-radiation supplements for surface activity. The atmosphere is thin and dirty below the cloud line and trace above. Sunlight penetration below the cloud line is 75% at maximum illumination. Surface is classified as generally unstable, though significant disruption is transient nearest the surface.

This planetary condition is said to be a recent transformation dating back several decades and resulting from an orbital intersection with a previously uncharted meteor swarm (local reference Silver Swarm) that rendered the surface nearly uninhabitable, but introduced significant surface and near-surface deposits of germanium across the planet.

This might explain why the planet drop off the maps during the Third Succession War.

This planet is the scenario of the PC game MechWarrior 3: Pirate's Moon. The Eridani Light Horse attacked the planet in order to dislodge a pirate band that was exploiting the planet's resources: Germanium.

Apocryphal Content Ends

Oporto reappeared on maps at some point during or after the FedCom Civil War as an independent system named Veil,[13][14] prior to being incorporated into or annexed by the Rim Territories at some point during the early Dark Age.[15][16]

Planetary History

In or around 3079 intelligence services working for the Republic of the Sphere reported that the mercenary command Hexare Grenadiers, working for the Lyran Alliance Armed Forces at the time, had uncovered a Word of Blake Level II on Oporto and called in the Qanatir MTM to help destroy the Blakists. Notably, the RAF intelligence services referred to the system as Oporto, not Veil, despite Veil being in use on maps.[38]
