Crest of the Outworlds Alliance

The Alliance Military Corps (abbreviated AMC) is the military arm of the Outworlds Alliance in the thirty-first century. Founded as a pacifistic and largely agrarian nation, the Outworlds Alliance had no standing national military force until the twenty-sixth century.

Organization[edit]

The Alliance Military Corps is split into three branches:[1]

Aerospace organization[edit]

At some point[citation needed][when?], the Alliance Military Corps switched the hierarchy for aerospace wings and aerospace regiments as a way to confuse Inner Sphere intelligence analysts.

After that point[citation needed][when?], the typical Alliance Military Corps aerospace hierarchy was

Unit name Unit composition Total number of elements
Flight 2 aerospace fighters 2 aerospace fighters
Squadron 3 flights 6 aerospace fighters
Regiment 3 squadrons + command flight 20 aerospace fighters
Wing 3 regiments + command flight 62 aerospace fighters

Thus, a typical Alliance aerospace regiment is actually the same strength as a typical Inner Sphere aerospace wing, and a typical Alliance aerospace wing is actually the same strength as a typical Inner Sphere aerospace regiment.

History[edit]

Age of War[edit]

Until the rise of piracy and banditry that resulted from the mass drawdowns of the various Inner Sphere militaries as a result of the formation of the Star League, the Outworlds Alliance had no need of a state-level military force, and the Alliance was such a remote nation that it was only in the early to mid-twenty-sixth century that the Outworlds Alliance had expanded to the point where its border worlds were within easy jump distance of the outer borders of the Draconis Combine and Federated Suns. Up to this point, each world within the Alliance was responsible for its own defense, and generally maintained nothing more than a local constabulary backed up by a loose militia of able-bodied volunteers who stepped up during times of emergency.[2]

Reunification War[edit]

The nascent Star League deployed armed troops onto a number of Outworlds Alliance worlds as "peacekeepers" in 2572, ostensibly to provide "mutual defense and protection" against the pirates and bandits that had appeared as a result of the formation of the League in 2571.[3] These troops were actually deployed in response to the decision by the new President of the Outworlds Alliance, Grigori Avellar, to order the creation of the Outworlds Alliance Militia and a crash armament program, and were intended to eliminate the threat posed by the Alliance BattleMech forces, such as they were.[2]

The Outworlds Alliance Militia was initially recruited largely from foreigners rather than native Alliance members, with the Militia actively hiring trained armed forces personnel who had been retired from service for various reasons by the nations of the Inner Sphere, and the Militia was equipped predominantly with armored vehicles supplemented by a small number of companies of light and medium BattleMechs purchased illicitly by the Alliance in the run up to the Reunification War. Negotiations with Alexander Davion following the discovery of under-the-table procurement of military hardware from Federated Suns armament companies led ultimately to a clandestine treaty that exchanged twelve underdeveloped but water-rich Alliance border worlds for continuing supplies of matériel and ultimately, in 2581, the Pitcairn Legion, a three-Regiment formation of experienced AFFS personnel and equipment acting notionally as mercenaries within the Alliance Militia.[4]

In 2582 the Outworlds Alliance Militia obtained a significant quantity of BattleMechs from the defeat of the SLDF Thirty-seventh Royal Brigade on Haynesville,[5] which allowed the Militia to form two new BattleMech regiments, the Santiago Carabiniers and the Pitkin Lancers. The Militia also managed to form two BattleMech regiments from salvage and Federated Suns sources in late 2582, the Alliance Borderers and the Alliance Grenadiers.[6]

Composition[edit]

Commander: Chairman Welkens Nordd[7]
Initial Force Strength:

  • BattleMech Regiments: 1 (increasing to 3 in 2582)
  • Armor Regiments: 32

Deployment Status[edit]

In 2750 the OAM had a strength of five BattleMech regiments and four WarShips. As of 2765 the OAM officially had a military strength of eleven BattleMech regiments, each supported by two armor and three infantry regiments,[9] plus fifteen Pinto-class corvettes led by the OAS Pulsar commanded by Chairman Arthur Ingelmann.[10] In truth, the Militia's strength was bolstered by a substantial contingent from the Secret Army formed and trained by Stefan Amaris, and when the Periphery Uprising erupted full-force, the military strength of the Militia and Secret Army detachments combined amounted to some nineteen divisions, composed of some seventy-two conventional regiments and one hundred 'Mech regiments in addition to the fifteen Pintos.[11]

Mercenaries are employed for garrison duty or limited defensive contracts. Some mercenary units are hired by business interests in the Alliance.

During the Jihad Clan Snow Raven began forming close ties with the Outworlds Alliance. Working towards a merger similar to that of Clan Ghost Bear with the Free Rasalhague Republic, the Snow Ravens assumed control of the AMC. Though the Ravens anticipated taking complete control and retiring all the Alliance Military Corps, the realities of the Jihad led to Alliance formations serving alongside Raven front-line forces.[12]
