Canned Heat was a mercenary unit formed in the aftermath of Operation GUERRERO.

History[edit]

In 3057, in the aftermath of the Marik-Liao invasion of the Sarna March, Saiph became an independent world and was forced into the Saiph Triumvirate under Duke Balatine. The forces of different city-states were put together to form Canned Heat as a mercenary force at battalion level. The troops have battled each other in the past and the "hotheads" are their trademark. During their extended defense of Saiph the formerly conventional unit manages to amass nearly a battalion of BattleMechs. Hiring individual MechWarriors form Outreach to fill in the gaps, they have fleshed out nicely as a combined arms unit.[1][2]

The destruction of the central government on Saiph left the Canned Heat without an employer. The Word of Blake took their contract and trimmed the unit for an off-world assignment in the near future.[2]

The Fourth Division was assigned to this planet with the task to bring stability to Saiph. Their new employer gave the unit a training cycle, after which they were ordered to defend the planet and to train the new Protectorate Militia.[2]

During Operation SCOUR, the Word of Blake responded to the loss of Marcus by dispatching a combination of hired mercenary (in the form of the Canned Heat, Clifton's Rangers, The Furies and the Stealthy Tigers[3] to retake Marcus on the 11th of August; the coalition forces[4] including the 20th Marik Militia[5] had no choice but to retreat to the nearby world of Dieudonné.[4] Two teams of ComStar affiliated Blake's Wrath units destroyed the uranium mines to deny them to the Word of Blake. The mercenaries the Blakists had sent were not concerned with limiting collateral damage, and when word of the Coalition's conquest of Terra reached them, the natives (aided by ComStar) overthrew their mercenary overseers, though some of them had already escaped when the fall of Terra news had arrived.[6][3]

It is not known if the unit fled the planet or died there.
