Unit Description

II Corps, also known as the 2nd Corps, was a very large military formation within the Star League Defense Force at the height of the Star League consisting of five full Divisions each of three Brigades plus two independent Regiments.[1]

History

Formation

The formation of II Corps began soon after the formation of the Star League, during the initial organization of the Star League Defense Force by Commander-in-Chief Lady Shandra Noruff-Cameron, and shared a number of similarities with I Corps. II Corps consisted of a full Royal Brigade as well as two additional Royal BattleMech regiments and a Royal armor regiment from the Terran Hegemony, with the remaining troops drawn equally from other Star League member states. Initially under the command of Major General Amos Forlough, II Corps was not as well equipped as I Corps but but trained hard to reach Elite status before forming a part of the Outworlds Alliance task force.[2]

It was the hard training regimen the units of II Corps undertook prior to the Reunification War that saw the majority of the regiments within II Corps miss out on the opportunity to take part in the United Triumph series of exercises that comprehensively embarrassed the nascent SLDF.[3]

Reunification War

As time past since the excerise, tensions with the Periphery nations grew. Lord Ian Cameron raise tariffs against the Periphery nations in hopes to leverage to make them join the Star League. A series of incidents would be played out between two sides, however, it would until after the Malagrotta Crisis in 2753 would the final straw of patience for the League would be used up. Lord Ian Cameron had viewed them uncivilized and threat to his creation. He and League members voted for war, and Ian Cameron would issue the Pollux Proclamation to the Periphery which was unoffical declaration of war. he would begin move his realm and the Corps elements begun their trek to their stating point along the Periphery.

Second Corps would be part of the Expedition targeting the Outworlds Alliance, with the 5th Corps and Auxiliary Corps consisting of House Kurita troops. The Corps and rest of Expedition mates would finally be in position in June 2581. The Expedition's commander, SLDF General Amos Forlough would personal take the 2nd Corps' troops and take the Outworlds Alliance mining worlds of Bryceland and Groveld with little resistence. However, secretly elements of the House Davion would strike deal with Alliance's leadership to deploy a a more sustainal force which would fight off General Forlough's military advance into the periphery nation.

On Sevon in October, the Corps would encounter the Pitcairn Legion. The three regiment brigade would cause would heavy casualties among Forlough's troops. This delayed the general's movement to seize the Alliance's capital of Alpheratz. By time reinforcements would arrive in the form of Galedon Regulars, the Legion had escaped the Sevon as Forlough would finally capture the planet for the Star League. However, due to defeats in the Taurian Campaign of the war. House Davion leadership would demand more reinforcements to be sent to the Concordat warfront. This would result the League's High Command to order the Second Corps and rest of the Expedition to hault its advance, which was only days away from assaulting Alpheratz. With third of his fleet send to Taurian Concordat, General Forlough would order his troops in 2582 to take several worlds surrounding Alpheratz. The Pitcairn Legion would attack Expedition's Kurita auxiliaries on Budingen. This would cause troops among expedition's Kurita auxiliaries to rage at the attack and they would take their frustation on the civilian populations of their occupied worlds. The Second Corps and other SLDF forces would also be ordered by General Forlough to execute 10 percent of the population of a dozen worlds. This would rally additional people to join the Alliance's militia to fight them with only rifles and explosives in hand.

The fighting would climax with "Day of Vengeance" on Tellman IV in 2583. Where the Corps' sister unit, the 5th Corps would get heavily damaged by the Alliance's mustered Army and the Pitcairn Legion. The battle would reduce the BattleMech forces of both sides, which caused the League come to a stalemate against the stiff resistence of the Alliance's population. Major-General Franklin Barnex would be send in and replaced Forlough as the Expedition's commander. He would fail to gain upper hand against Alliance troops due to lack of reinforcements. The Star League's war against the Alliance would end in 2585 with signing of the Peace of Cerberus treaty.[4]

Later Years

The II Corps as it would be know by 28th Century, would be assigned to the Lyran Commonwealth Military Region's 2nd District as part of the SLDF's 12th Army in 2764. The Periphery Uprising would have entire Corps deployed by General Aleksandr Kerensky to the Periphery fight the uprising. The Corps' 29th CAAN Marine Division would end up defecting to the side of the Periphery fight against their own comrades. By the end of the fighting with Periphery rebels, half of the Corps would be gone. Its 92nd BattleMech and 18th Royal Mechanized Infantry Divisions would be out rightly destroyed by the fighting, while its 29th Mechanized Infantry would be so heavily damaged, it would be disbanded from lack of personnel in 2766.

The remaining Divisions and regiments of the Corps would join Kerensky's Hegemony Campaign in 2767. Only two of its components would survive, the 11th Royals and 38th Light Horse, which answer Kerensky's call to join the Exodus. Elements of the disbanded 29th Mechanized would return opt to remain and join the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery instead of traveling with the Exodus Fleet.[5]
