The Captain-General had her flagship, the FWLS Albert Marik, orbitting above Scheuerheck, and it was to this ship that she had the leaders of Scheuerheck, Payvand and Ruschegg bought. Each expected a summary execution; instead, Marik entertained them cordially, and offered each world a place back in the Free Worlds League. Marik made it clear that she expected First Lord Ian Cameron to grant the Free Worlds League control of the worlds after the Reunification War whatever happened, but emphasized that if the three leaders chose, they could rejoin the Free Worlds League voluntarily and remain in power. Refusing wouldn't result in punishment or execution for any of them - but it would force her to replace them with military governors. The Payvand system was home to at least one habitable world, Payvand IV, and as at 3145 was an independent system located in the border region between the Free Worlds League, Duchy of Andurien and Magistracy of Canopus.[2][3]

System Description

The Payvand system is located near the Ceará and Glevakha systems[4][5] and consists of at least four planets orbiting a class F2V primary.[1]

System History

The Payvand system was colonised at some point prior to the end of the Age of War.[6][7]

Payvand IV

Template:InfoBoxPlanetStandard

Payvand IV - more commonly known simply as Payvand - is the fourth planet in the system and has a single moon named Portents.[1]

Planetary History

Reunification War

Settled at some point after the formation of the Capellan Confederation, Payvand joined the Free Worlds League at some point prior to the mid-twenty-sixth century. When Kossandra Centralla began her campaign to recruit or subvert the allegience of periphery worlds and dissaffected inner worlds to her own Magistracy Free State and later the Magistracy of Canopus, Payvand was one of the worlds she targetted. At some point in the 2550s, Payvand and the neighbouring worlds of Ruschegg and Scheuerheck took the Magestrix up on her offer and left the Free Worlds League to join her realm.[7]

The Captain-General at the time, Albert Marik, was too preoccupied by the Third Andurien War and the formation of the Star League to direct any particular attention to three border worlds, even one as heavily industrialised as Payvand, and free will was a large part of the culture of the Free Worlds League. Payvand thereby managed to remain a part of the Magistracy until 2578, when the Reunification War came to the Canopian worlds. The commander of the Star League Defense Force task force assigned to conquer the Magistracy was Captain-General Marion Marik; the opening year of the war saw the SLDF capture several worlds within the Magistracy, but ambushes, deceptions and raids by the Magistracy Armed Forces slowed the SLDF campaign and saw the plan for the military campaign change. Marik decided to create a buffer zone between the Magistracy and those worlds acting as staging areas and supply depots for the task force, and selected Payvand as one of the worlds to be a part of that buffer zone.[7]

While the greater part of the task force was VII Corps from the SLDF, the Free Worlds League had contributed a number of units as an auxiliary force. Those FWLM units saw the recapture of Payvand as an opportunity to recapture lost territory; as a result, when the SLDF Fifty-seventh Brigade arrived on Payvand between July and December 2578, it was supported by not just the Thirty-fifth Royal CAAN Marine Regiment but also the Fourth and Fifth Marik Militias, Second Oriente Hussars and the Juggernaut regiment of the Stewart Dragoons, more than enough to overwhelm the local garrison.[8]

Despite the forces that landed on Payvand, the population resisted, and Payvand became the site of one of the few engagements in the war against the Magistracy of Canopus where battles took place inside urban environments in breach of the letter of the Ares Conventions. The SLDF troops were forced to take control of the city of New Barcelona as well as the PayMax Industriplex in a series of bitterly fought clashes between insurgents and SLDF/FWLM infantry and armor units. Despite the need to pacify the world, Marik refused to allow 'Mechs to enter the conflict within the built up areas, sticking as closely as she could to the spirit of the Ares Conventions; this left the conventional troops performing anti-riot operations, as well as clearing streets and individual buildings in a protracted campaign that finally saw the world declared as pacified in November 2579.[7]

Acting out of self-interest, all three leaders endorsed petitions asking for their worlds to be reincorporated back into the Free Worlds League, petitions that Cameron approved in 2579.[7]

The easy capture and reintegration of Payvand along with the other border worlds was used extensively by Marik's allies in the Free Worlds League Parliament to make headway against those who had lobbied against joining the Star League, despite the fact that at a local level, guerrilla activity on Payvand would rumble on until partway through the next decade.[7]

Jihad

After the dissolution of the Free Worlds League, Payvand was left on its own. It had hosted a Hero Training Institute facility for decades by this point, but the Institute - the second-oldest of the Hero Training Institutes - was in poor condition, with out-of-date equipment.[1]
