Unit Description

The Roman's Mounted Fusiliers was originally a light weight House Liao BattleMech regiment which specialized in using swiftness of their 'Mechs to out maneuver their enemies.

The unit originally was known as Shepard's Mounted Fusiliers and Aliesha's Mounted Fusiliers.

History

As the Shepard's Mounted Fusiliers

The Fusiliers were first formed in the late thirtieth century from several mercenary battalions that volunteered to form the unit during the Third Succession War.

The unit's first notable action came in 2987 where it and other units of the St. Ives Armored Cavalry brigade were deployed on the Davion front to help distract Davion forces invading the Confederation to turn their attention back to their home space a raid on Aosia. The Regiment's Light 'Mechs were leading elements, used as forward scouts against Davion forces and were deployed to lure them into ambushes. Despite the unit becoming a formal house unit for House Liao, the unit continued its mercenary traditions. Where in 3003 the Fusiliers conducted a planetary raid against the Davion world of Pinard. The Fusiliers obtained ten cases of the planet's famed and rare Pinard Pinot during the unauthorized raid. The capture of these rare wines gained the envy of its sister units in the Regiment.[1] During the Fourth Succession War, the unit was stationed on Texlos where unlike many of its hard-pressed sister units during the early parts of the war, it went unengaged.[2]

As the Aliesha's Mounted Fusiliers

After the succession of the Duchess Liao's St. Ives Compact, the Fusiliers out part of protest over the succession for the Confederation would revert to their origins as mercenary force. However, they remained in service via contract with the Compact. They remained in their service due in part of their association with St. Ives and paranoia of then-Chancellor Romano Liao.[3] The unit soon by 3050, came under the command of Colonel Aleshia Carling and its name was changed to Aliesha's Mounted Fusiliers. The unit was stationed on Vestalias during this time period as the Clan Invasion begun spinward.[4]

Capellan-St. Ives War and its Aftermath

In 3062, the Compact came under occupation of the Star League Defense Force by command of First Lord, Chancellor Sun-Tzu Liao. As part of peacekeeping forces, the Fusiliers' garrison world of Vestalias came under change of the Draconis Combine combat unit of the 2nd Dieron Regulars. The Dieron's Commander. Tai-sa Jim Nicolas, ordered the Fusiliers and its Vestalias Home Guard counterparts to surrender. They refused and began fighting the Regulars. This later would be referred to as the beginning of the Capellan-St. Ives War. Reinforcements were deployed to help reinforce the Fusiliers' position, however the stalemate ended with the arrival of elements of the McCarron's Armored Cavalry. The elite former mercenaries of House Liao forced the Fusiliers to quit Vestalias for Armaxa. After a period of rest and refit, the St. Ives's High Command ordered the Fusiliers to relieve forces on the beleaguered world of St. Loris. The burn into the St. Loris system proved to be problematic, where its 84th Fusilier Air Wing was virtually wiped out by Capellan forces. Fighting on the planet with House Liao forces was conducted in a series of hit and fade actions, where the Fusiliers tried to tie up CCAF units without all-out engagement. Near the end of the conflict the Fusiliers were outnumbered and out of supplies. Feeling she had no choice, Colonel Aliesha Carling ordered the unit to surrender to Liao forces rather than the unit being destroyed. Their surrender of St. Loris was a blow to the Compact's war efforts, however it allowed the unit to survive. After the conflict concluded, Chancellor Liao ordered the release of the Fusiliers and release of their equipment back to them. Sun-Tzu then offered full citizenship to the mercenaries in return for becoming a house unit once again. The Fusiliers accepted the offer, and became a reserve Regiment in the newly formed St. Ives Sentinels brigade. In the years after the Fusiliers became a full-fledged unit, its status was left as questionable. St. Ives's SIMC shortened supplies to the unit while they were still stationed on St. Loris. Strategic Director Zahan would order investigation in the shorting of supplies to the unit, as Sang-Shao Aliesha Carling tried to rebuild her damaged unit.[5]

As Roman's Mounted Fusiliers

In 3065, Sang-shao Aliesha Carling would hastily be retired from her commanding the Fusiliers, this brought members squabbling about their loyalty to Duchess Candace Liao. Sang-shao Peter Roman would take command of the unit and cashier troublemakers out service. The unit would as traditionally in the past, be renamed for unit's commanding officer last name. After Sang-shao Roman would bring order to the unit, by 3067 have it nearly back to full strength and stationed on Texlos.[6] In 3068, Federated Suns Duke George Hasek launched his invasion of the Confederation. After the death of Duchess Liao and reported death of the Chancellor on Sian, the Fusiliers were called up as part of Task Forces to retake worlds stolen by the Capellan March. In 3069, the Fusiliers were assigned to take world of Warlock back from turncoat unit, the 2nd Janissaries. The Fusiliers would ground their DropShips in the planetary capital city where the Janissaries's Combat Command Gamma was held up. After two days of fighting since their landing would have skirmishes outside the city, this ended when Fusiliers form up drove force into the Janissaries' defenses. The attack would force Janissaries from their positions and fight Fusiliers into the center of the city. Five hours of bloody fighting ended with the complete destruction of the Janissaries to the last man and leave the city in ruins.[7] The Fusiliers would be left to garrison Warlock for nearly a decade, until the unit would finally be called up to attack the Word of Blake Protectorate held world of Pleione in 3078.[8] The planet had been softened up by July 3075 attack by CCAF forces using atomic weaponry against the Blakists defenders.[9] The Fusilier's invasion was part of a second Task Force sent to the planet where they would find the planet hard to liberate after heavy fighting outside the planet's capital.[10][11] The Fusiliers were teamed with Warrior House Hiritsu and the Harloc Raiders.[12] The unit took up garrison duty on Pleione, the unit fighting had reduced the unit to 50% of its fighting strength, but it morale was running high due finally being freed of their duties in St. Ives Commonality. However despite trying to show their loyalty to the realm, Maskirovka remain suspicious of former mercenaries as of 3079.[13]

During Operation GOLDEN FORTRESS, Roman's Mounted Fusiliers hit the 46th Nova Cat Cavaliers on Buchlau (defeating the Clan unit), and drove the Second and Fourth Auxiliaries off of Yangtze. After this, they launched a series of raids on Basalt, Angol, and Achernar designed to sow chaos. Finally Stone's Liberators and Stone's Revenants caught up to the Mounted Fusiliers on Slocum and effectively destroyed them.[14] The unit was relocated to Indicass in 3085 to rebuild from its heavy losses.[15]

Dark Age

During the Victoria War Roman's Mounted Fusiliers and the Red Lancers assaulted Shuen Wan. They forced the 1st Oriente Hussars and 6th Oriente Hussars to withdraw from the system.[16] In 3104 they faced the 8th Oriente Hussars on Pella II, inflicting heavy losses on the Hussars.[17]

Tactics

In its earlier career when the unit was known as Shepard's Mounted Fusiliers, it used light and medium class BattleMechs to allow for swift combat. The Fusiliers employed these lighter BattleMechs in the reconnaissance role in support of other Liao formations. They also used tactics to lure opponents into traps where they could ambush its enemies.[18]

By the 3060s, the unit's tactics had changed under the leadership of Aleisha Carling. As Aleisha's Mounted Fusiliers, they specialized in urban battlegrounds after their experiences in the Capellan-St. Ives War on St. Loris. The unit became skilled in fighting in tight quarters of city environment, after fighting their Capellan opponents for control of the planet.[19]

Unit Emblem

Its emblem was originally a grizzly bear mounted atop an armored personnel carrier.

Notes

The Mounted Fusiliers started to change its name after Aleshia Carling took command of the Regiment during its mercenary career. This tradition continued after Carling's retirement and Peter Roman's ascendance to rank of Sang-shao. It is unclear what became of Carling, or why she was given a sudden retirement.[27]

It is unclear as of this writing the status of the Mounted Fusiliers' supporting Regiments.
