The Buchlau system was home to at least one habitable world, Buchlau III, and as of 3145 was located in the Tikonov Commonality of the Capellan Confederation.[2][3]

System Description[edit]

Buchlau is located near the Algol and Conwy systems[4] and consists of a class F5II primary orbited by four planets.[1]

System History[edit]

The Buchlau system was settled during or shortly after the First Exodus from Terra and was a part of the Tikonov Grand Union when the Capellan Confederation formed in the mid-twenty-fourth century.[5]

Buchlau III, more commonly known simply as Buchlau, is the third of four planets in the Buchlau system. Buchlau has three moons named Berchtold, Graf and Leopold.[1]

Planetary History[edit]

Buchlau was settled for its fish. The planet only has a single continent, Vienna, which is surrounded by a massive ocean. This ocean is teeming with life. Fish are plentiful in these waters, some of them as large as Terra's killer whale. Shortly after it was settled, Buchlau started exporting its fish to nearby worlds. It was able to maintain these exports throughout the early Succession Wars for one simple reason: Buchlau has no military worth or strategic value. During the Fourth Succession War the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns took control of Buchlau. The Capellans made no move to recover the world until the chaos of Operation Guerrero, when pro-Capellan insurgents tried to stir up nationalist feelings. George Hasek spent a great deal of money to counter these insurgents and keep the world as part of the Capellan March.[1]

The capital of Buchlau is Belgrade, which is located on the large plateau in the center of Vienna. This plateau is surrounded by dense jungle. The landscape makes the name "Buchlau" amusing, as Buchlau was named after a Germanic-style castle located in the Terran province of Moravia.[1]

After hearing how the Word of Blake treated Algol and Algot, the governor of the world contacted the Blakists and offered to surrender. This kept the world in one piece and able to provide food to neighboring systems. Buchlau was incorporated into the Word of Blake Protectorate during the first two weeks of December 3069.[29]

In contrast to many worlds incorporated into the Word of Blake Protectorate, Buchlau was liberated without a shot on the 1st of September 3077 when Devlin Stone personally led a contingent of allied coalition forces to the world as a part of Operation SCOUR.[37]
