Description

Designed in 2741 at the request of General Aleksandr Kerensky, the King Crab is one of the most fearsome BattleMechs to have ever existed. The ‘Mech is designed for two purposes. The first is to bring as much firepower on a target as possible. The second and more important reason is as an area denial weapon. When a King Crab is on a battlefield there is an area around the ‘Mech that most other units do not want to enter for fear of the twin Deathgiver Autocannon/20s being used on them. The ‘Mech is not without its disadvantages, though. The King Crab only has a limited amount of ammunition, which limits its battlefield usefulness as once its precious autocannon ammunition is depleted, it is more of a target for massed fire than a weapon.

Armament

As mentioned previously, the King Crab's primary weapons are two massive Deathgiver Autocannon/20s. Alone, each of these weapons is capable of ripping a limb or torso off of most light and medium ‘Mechs. In concert, the two weapons can cripple even a heavy BattleMech in one salvo. To back up the autocannons, the King Crab carries an ExoStar Large Laser and a Simpson-15 LRM-15 launcher to give it some long-range and indirect fire capabilities.

Variants

  • KGC-000b - The 000b variant is an upgrade of the classic KGC-000 built exclusively for the SLDF Royal units. An upgrade to double heat sink technology allowed the removal of three heat sinks. This allows an extra ton of ammunition for each autocannon, as well as an Artemis IV FCS for the missile launcher. BV(2.0) = 2,042
  • KGC-0000 – The KGC-0000 is a downgraded version of the KGC-000. The ‘Mech has sacrificed very little in this downgrade. The Ferro-Fibrous armor was replaced with standard armor and the CASE equipment was removed. This freed up an additional ton, which was used to add another ton of armor, bringing the armor protection almost in line with that of the KGC-000. BV (1.0) = 1,401, BV (2.0) = 1,806
  • KGC-001 – One of the so-called "Clanbuster" variants developed in the lead-up to the Battle of Tukayyid, ComStar's techs replaced the twin autocannons with two M-7 Gauss Rifles, trading a minor reduction in destructive capacity for greatly increased range. Also, the Large Laser was upgraded to a Tronel XIII Large Pulse Laser and two Hovertec Streak SRM-2s with a single ton of reloads were added. These changes were accomplished by using an extralight engine in place of the standard model. [1] BV (1.0) = 1,714, BV (2.0) = 2,224
  • KGC-005 – The -005 King Crab is an upgraded version of the 000 model. The Autocannons have been upgraded to LB-X Autocannon/20s and the Large Laser has been upgraded to an ER Large Laser. The LRM-15 has been completely removed from the ‘Mech and replaced with two Streak SRM-4s. The final upgrade is the inclusion of an improved C3 computer to allow the King Crab to work in concert with up to five other units sharing targeting telemetry. BV (1.0) = 1,918, BV (2.0) = 2,264
  • KGC-008 - Produced by Cosara Weaponries for Word of Blake following their capture of the facility in 3069, the 008 uses the latest technologies available at the time. The main feature of this upgrade of the 001 is the use of improved jump jets that enable this King Crab to jump up to 150 meters at a time. This allows it to stay at medium range and make good use of the pair of Heavy PPCs that it carries. The powerful weapons are backed up by paired Light Autocannon/5s, each of which is fed from a one-ton, CASE-protected ammunition bin. Two ER Medium Lasers back up these guns. Like other Blakist units, a C3i Computer is included. The main problem with this design is its heat dissipation capabilities. The twin PPCs can quickly overwhelm the ten double heat sinks, let alone the backup weapons. BV (2.0) = 2,360
  • KGC-009 - Seemingly unaware that the Federated Commonwealth is a memory, StarCorps Industries mated technologies from the two halves of that sundered realm to create another variant. The 009 hearkens back to the 005 with its use of a standard engine. Primarily a medium range powerhouse, this design carries twin Rotary Autocannon/5s and Light PPCs. A Plasma Rifle can cause massive heat buildup in enemies, while a Streak SRM-6 is adept at finding and exploiting holes in an opponent's armor. The inclusion of Light Ferro-Fibrous armor allows this variant to be the most heavily-armored variant of the King Crab, albeit not by much. That armor is needed, as the autocannons and missile launcher are fed from the same place, where those ammunition bins are the only critical systems, leaving them open to damage and explosion. BV (2.0) = 2,523
  • KGC-010 - This version of the King Crab was created by the Star League to be a command 'Mech. Instead of the autocannons, it mounts paired PPCs and LB-X Autocannon/10s. Though it is mentioned in the technical readout, the 010 does not appear in the accompanying record sheet compilation. BV (2.0) = 2,181
  • KGC-20-A - The Dark Age version of the King Crab, visually quite different than the original. This version mounts a mixture of energy, ballistic, and missile weaponry as well as heavy armor.

Related BattleMechs

  • Supernova - Evidence strongly suggests the Supernova is an upgraded Clan version of the King Crab. Lighter than the King Crab, the Supernova replaces the King Crab's armament with a trio of ER Large Lasers in each arm.[3] BV (1.0) = ?, BV (2.0) = ?
  • Crab - Though weighing in at half the tonnage, this popular Star League 'mech shared a similar profile to its much larger "cousin".[citation needed]
